Nanjing Road, one of the most famous commercial streets in the world. The broader Nanjing Road includes Nanjing East Road and Nanjing West Road. The narrow sense of Nanjing Road, i.e. Nanjing Road before 1945, refers exclusively to today's Nanjing Road East (Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street).
History
Nanjing Road originated as Park Lane, which led from the Bund to the ballpark on Henan Road in 1851, and was extended to Zhejiang Road, commonly known as Dama Road, in 1854, and then extended westward to Xizang Road in 1862, and was formally named Nanjing Road by the Bureau of Public Works of Shanghai's Public **** Concession in 1865. Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street
