Peking University Seckler Archaeological Art Museum is located in Hemingyuan, Peking University, which is the first archaeological museum in China universities. The exhibition hall covers an area of about 2000 square meters, and the collection includes: stone tools, bronzes, Oracle bones, pottery, porcelain, calligraphy and painting, inscriptions, etc. The basic exhibition is divided into seven parts: Paleolithic Age, Neolithic Age, Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties, Warring States, Qin and Han Dynasties, Sanjin Dynasty, Southern and Northern Dynasties, Sui and Tang Dynasties, Song Dynasty, Liao Dynasty, Jin Dynasty, Yuan Dynasty and Ming Dynasty.
Development history
Peking University Sekler Archaeological Art Museum is located in the scenic west campus of Peking University. 1986 laid the foundation stone, and 1993 officially opened on May 27th. The exhibition hall covers an area of about 2000 square meters, and the collection includes: stone tools, bronzes, Oracle bones, pottery, porcelain, calligraphy and painting, inscriptions, etc. The basic exhibition is divided into seven parts: Paleolithic Age, Neolithic Age, Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties, Warring States, Qin and Han Dynasties, Sanjin Dynasty, Southern and Northern Dynasties, Sui and Tang Dynasties, Song Dynasty, Liao Dynasty, Jin Dynasty, Yuan Dynasty and Ming Dynasty. Other temporary exhibitions are mostly cooperative exhibitions with the Brother Pavilion.
It was opened in May, 1993, and was built by Peking University and American friend Dr. Arthur Seckler. The exhibition hall of sackler Archaeological Art Museum in Peking University covers an area of 2000 square meters. At present, there are tens of thousands of pieces in the collection, most of which are typical specimens of various archaeological periods in China, such as Zhoukoudian Peking Man Stone Tools, representative artifacts of different archaeological cultures in the Neolithic Age, bronzes and jades unearthed from the ancient tombs of the Western Zhou Dynasty in Oracle Bone Inscriptions in Shang Dynasty, as well as pottery, coins, clay seals and folk cultural relics. These collections began in the Sinology Archaeological Laboratory of Peking University Institute of Archaeology in the 1920s, and have since been collected by Peking University Museum and yenching university Prehistoric Museum. After the 1950s, the teaching specimens obtained by Peking University Archaeological Department from the field archaeological workplace, donated items allocated by various cultural relics, archaeological institutions and museums in China, and cultural relics donated by cultural relics collectors at home and abroad were added.
Architectural composition
Peking University Sekler Archaeological Art Museum is an antique building, which is consistent with other buildings in the school, simple and elegant. The exhibition is divided into two parts: one is a series exhibition of archaeological teaching specimens in China, which is displayed in the order of times and archaeological culture; The other is an exhibition of archaeological achievements from the Department of Archaeology of Peking University, which is displayed in a centralized way according to the working place. The exhibits include Jinniushan people, the Neolithic settlement site in Beizhuang, Changdao, Shandong Province, the Jin Culture Tomb in Quwoqu Village, Shanxi Province, and the Guantaiyao site in Cixian County, Hebei Province. There are more than 20,000 pieces in the collection, most of which are typical specimens of archaeological teaching, such as stone tools unearthed from important archaeological sites in the Paleolithic Age, typical archaeological cultural relics in the Neolithic Age, ancient tombs in Oracle Bone Inscriptions in the Middle Shang Dynasty, bronzes, jade articles and ceramics unearthed from sites, coins, clay sculptures and folk cultural relics, and the Western Zhou Dynasty. Being in it, you will feel a strong academic atmosphere and rigorous academic attitude. The museum displays the archaeological teaching and research specimens collected by the Department of Archaeology of Peking University all the year round, regularly organizes exhibitions to show the important achievements of archaeology, and organizes exchange exhibitions sponsored by other museums and academic research institutions. The exhibition pays attention to the application of archaeological unearthed materials, and chooses the exact archaeological excavation site. According to China's archaeological discipline system, exhibits are organized according to time, region and archaeological culture, and several groups of artifacts from the same archaeological stratigraphic unit are specially exhibited.
