In the seventh year of the Great Cause of Sui Dynasty (A.D. 6 1 1 year), Zhai Rang gathered in Wagang Village, which is now south of hua county, Henan Province, and raised the anti-Sui banner. In the first year of Wude (AD 6 18), Shi Mi led his troops to the Tang Dynasty. Before and after nine years, there was an active peasant armed force in the Central Plains, aiming at the Sui Dynasty. Wagangjun was one of the three rebels with the earliest, fastest development and strongest strength in the peasant uprising at the end of Sui Dynasty. Founder Zhai Rang was born in Weicheng (now southeast of hua county, Henan). With the county people Dan Xiong Xin, Yin Ji County (now north of Heze) Li Hu, Xu Shiqi and others rebelled together.

At first, at the junction of Xingyang County (now Zhengzhou, Henan Province) and Liang Jun County (now Shangqiu, Henan Province) where Bianshui passed, Wagangjun seized the goods of public and private ships, killed the rich and helped the poor, and repeatedly defeated Sui Jun's encirclement and suppression.
