In most British families, there are four meals a day, namely: breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner. Of course, this can be said to be the standard for ordinary wealthy families.
The time for breakfast is approximately between seven and nine in the morning. The main varieties of breakfast are: oatmeal porridge made with oatmeal or barley flakes, milk, sugar or salt, ham and eggs (either omelette or boiled egg), and bread with butter or orange jam. Have lunch at about one o'clock noon. It is usually cold meat, potatoes and salad dishes made with cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, lettuce and beets. Most people just drink some water at lunch, some drink wine or beer. Even in wealthy families, it is customary not to drink alcoholic beverages such as whiskey or brandy at lunch.
Tea time between four and five o'clock in the afternoon is an informal meal of the day. If you are visiting a friend, you can just go and have tea without being invited or saying hello in advance. Drinking tea is relatively casual. Everyone holds a tea bowl, a saucer and a small teaspoon. Biscuits and cakes are placed in the saucer. Do not eat cakes, bread or biscuits first, and do not put two cakes or slices of bread on your plate at the same time.
Dinner is the most important meal of the day. Many people also change into formal evening wear for dinner. If you are invited to a dinner, you must find out whether you need to wear an evening gown. Because if you don't know in advance, you will feel very embarrassed if you are the only one wearing casual clothes when you go to the dinner. Dinner is usually at 7:30 in the evening. The whole family gathers at the dining table in an upright manner. The head of the family sits at one end of the rectangular table and the housewife sits at the other end. If there is a guest, then he will sit in the seat of honor, that is, to the right of the housewife. If there are several guests, the seat of honor goes to the most important guest. During dinner, you can have a conversation with the people sitting to your left and right, but not to those who are far away from you.
Other countries, like us, eat three meals a day. A few people have the habit of eating late night snacks.
