Hu Xiaoshi loves his disciples. After teaching, he often invites several students, or goes to several time-honored restaurants in the south and north of the city to taste delicious food, or drinks tea at the Sweeping Leaf Building in Liang Qingshan, or eats "dried bean curd" at the stand beside Qinhuai River in Confucius Temple. As a "gourmet", Hu Xiaoshi attached great importance to "food culture" and was even more intoxicated with the atmosphere of drinking, writing poems and discussing literature and history with his disciples and friends. He once said more than once: "Life is three good things, one is good at reading, the other is good at writing poetry, and the third is good at Dongpo meat." In the 1940s, he created a dish called "Mr. Hu Tofu", which is still included in the "Jinling Menu".
Hu Xiaoshi is cool and good at Kunqu Opera. It is another kind of "fun" for him to show Kunqu Opera to his disciples. Before the Anti-Japanese War, Suzhou Kunju Opera Troupe came to Nanjing to perform. Because few people enjoyed it, the selling rate was sometimes less than 10%. Hu Xiaoshi will come to every performance. He and Professor Huang Jigang always buy dozens of tickets together, invite disciples to visit them, and do their best to support the down-and-out artists in the pear garden. After liberation, Kunqu opera was revived, and the whole city of Beijing was scrambling to watch the Fifteen Levels. "One drama saves one drama" made Mr. Wang excited, and specially took his graduate students to see "A Dream in the Garden" at the Kunqu Opera Theatre in Jiangsu Province, and praised Zhang Da, a budding rookie at that time. Hu Xiaoshi is also interested in other operas and quyi. He once took his disciples to watch Yang Naizhen's Suzhou Pingtan, Chen Bohua's Han drama Cosmic Peak and Zhang Guixuan's Peking Opera Cuiping Mountain. Zhang Guixuan was 85 years old at that time. Saburo Shi Xiu, desperate in Cuiping Mountain, was able to perform on the stage with a steel knife weighing dozens of pounds, which was amazing. Hu Xiaoshi once wrote two poems "For Zhang Guixuan", one of which said: The Bohai Sea is happy in spring, and the lonely flowers are only tired, but they also bloom again. Cuiping, Song Lin Road, thousands of feet, I saw you in the light.
"The wise are in Leshan, and the benevolent are happy." Hu Xiaoshi's third "joy" is to be fascinated by the mountains and rivers, and to climb mountains and reminisce about the past with his protege. His female disciple and former director of Nanjing Museum, Zeng Zhaoqi, once wrote in the article "Remembering Hu Xiaoshi":
On sunny days in the Spring and Autumn Period, two or three disciples are often invited to travel with more than one person. Climb Niutou, climb Qixia, explore the former site of Stone Town and win Mochou Lake Scenic Area. When the lotus blooms in summer, the genius is dim, that is, go to Xuanwu Lake, take a boat, break the confused morning fog, shake it into the depths of the lotus, and the fragrance is refreshing, thinking that it is not easy to go south. When cherry blossoms are in full bloom, you can visit Xiaoling and Meihua Mountain and sit under the flowers and recite the quatrains of the Tang Dynasty. The tone is clear, echoing among trees, and its elegance is evident. "A wise man should use stupid kung fu", which is a sentence that Mr. Hu Xiaoshi warned his noble Wang Jisi. In his early years, he studied under Mr. Hu at Southeast University. Once, he sent a paper to Mr. Hu for review. This paper comments on Yuan Haowen's Thirty Poems, and uses Zhang Hua's words "The battle between Guan Ping and Guan Ping is beneficial to win the second place" to interpret the sentence "If the work is successful, the gold will be cast together." Hu Xiaoshi thinks that this allusion only explains the first sentence, and the second sentence is inconclusive, so he is advised to look up the book Guoyu. Mr. Keith checked it according to the instructions, only to know that the last sentence implied that Gou Jian used gold as a statue of Fan Li. For decades, professors who have become well-known scholars at home and abroad have always remembered Mr. Wang's inculcation. When he told young teachers about his academic experience, he also warned them to study in the future and remember his teaching.
"Smart people should use stupid kung fu" is not only teaching others, but also self-discipline. Despite his amazing memory, Mr. Hu Xiaoshi has always been very rigorous in his studies. Whether preparing lessons or writing articles, he always checks the original text and never relies solely on memory. Even those lessons that have been taught several times and have been learned by heart, he still carefully prepares from scratch. And the night before class, I devoted myself to preparing lessons, never went out to socialize, and never entertained guests at home. His disciple Zhou Xunchu once wrote an article recalling: "Nanjing is known as one of the three furnaces in the Yangtze River, and it is sweltering in midsummer night. I have seen my husband prepare lessons at his desk on summer nights many times ... I will never forget the moving scene of writing a book in a sweat. "
Hu Xiaoshi is a leading figure in Jinling calligraphy. When he teaches blackboard writing, he also pays great attention to using pen, structure, white cloth, strokes and strokes, which is called "unique skill". While listening to the lecture, the students appreciated Mr. Wang's superb calligraphy art. 196 1 When giving an academic report on the anniversary in May, the teacher said that the blackboard would be replaced. A classmate came forward to help clean the blackboard, and suddenly there was a cry, "No! Stop wiping! " At that time, the student was in a daze on the stage with a blackboard in his hand and was at a loss. It turned out that the teachers and students who came to attend the class could not bear to erase such a delicate blackboard writing. Seeing this, Mr Hu Xiaoshi couldn't help laughing.
Mr. Hu Xiaoshi's teaching art is also a must, because he has both body and mind. He is knowledgeable and has a deep memory. He specializes in agriculture, literature and history, and is good at painting. He taught the famous things in The Book of Songs and Songs of the South, not only citing classics to verify the source, but also drawing pictures on the spot and explaining them with pictures and texts. For example, when explaining the sentence "There are nine flowers in the orchid and a hundred acres in the tree" in Lisao, I quoted Wu's "Lisao Vegetation Sparse" in the Southern Song Dynasty, pointing out that orchids belong to Labiatae, with one flower as "orchid" and several flowers as "branches", and drew the shapes of different varieties on the blackboard. He also pointed out that "Eupatorium adenophorum" is "orchid" and "Mulan" is "Mulan", telling students that there are two kinds of Mulan in NTU campus, and the Jiming Temple can recognize Eupatorium adenophorum.
Hu Xiaoshi also painted "Tai Sui took a picture of a tiger in Yin Yue", and calculated Qu Yuan's birth year accordingly. He also painted Qu Yuan's three exiles and his eastward journey on the blackboard to help students understand Qu Yuan's bumpy experience more deeply. Hu Xiaoshi once gave her hand-painted "Qu Yuan Exile Map" to female disciple Wu Cuifen. Professor Wu Cuifen has always cherished and cared for the first draft of this exercise book-sized white paper.
According to Professor Zhou Xunchu's recollection, when Hu Xiaoshi taught graduate students in his later years, he often "wrapped a thick bag with an old baggage and put it in the left front of his seat. Whenever I talk about specific issues, I will open my schoolbag, take out relevant books, and consult the information according to the pre-clipped notes for everyone to pass on. " These materials include art periodicals, archaeological excavation reports, and Yang Li Department of Cultural History; Including ancient paintings and calligraphy works, such as Women's History, Nine Songs, Gao Yi and Wen Yuan. He asked students to accurately understand ancient artifacts and costumes and avoid specious, ridiculous and misleading children. He once laughed at a well-known "Qu Zi Xing Yin Tu" and made a joke because he didn't understand the ancient crown characters: "Qu Yuan's head is like a matchbox." Hu Xiaoshi is both knowledgeable and humorous. Not only does he make witty remarks in his lectures, but he often makes witty remarks in his daily life, which makes people laugh. Once talking about the story of "feeling life" in ancient mythology, Hu Xiaoshi took Liu Bang, the Emperor Gaozu, as an example. In order to raise his social status, he invented the story that his mother was pregnant with a dragon in the wind and rain. After the story was finished, he pretended to be puzzled: "I didn't expect this emperor to be a man who ignored his father's embarrassment and was not raised by others!" "
196 1 In May, Hu Xiaoshi, who was over 70 years old, attended the academic report on the celebration of the school and gave a lecture on the characteristics of Du Fu's poems. The classroom was packed, and President Guo Yingqiu and many professors (including Professor Duan Xizhong from the Chinese Department of Nanjing Normal University) came to listen. Hu Xiaoshi used walking as a metaphor to analyze the evolution and development trend of characters in the Tang Dynasty-early Tang literature walked in the hutongs of Nagato; Literature in the prosperous Tang Dynasty, running on thoroughfare avenue in high-powered chariots, was magnificent (especially Li and Durkheim). Literature in the middle Tang Dynasty rested in the garden pavilion (such as the ten gifted scholars in Dali), climbed mountains and walked in a narrow path (such as Han, Meng and Jia), and circled in the great plains (such as Yuan and Jia). Late Tang literature left the land and replaced cars with water (poetry came into being).
Some students asked about the similarities and differences between "case" and "law", and Hu Xiaoshi made an analogy: "The case can be changed, but the law cannot be moved. Just like everyone has two eyes, a nose and a bite on his face, this is an unchangeable law. But everyone's eyes, nose and mouth are different in length, height and size. This is a variable case. "
During the three-year natural disaster, the life of university professors was relatively poor, and the Hu Xiaoshi family had not eaten meat for many days. On one occasion, nanny Ma Xia managed to buy some meat, chop it into minced meat and cook it into minced meat porridge. When Hu Xiaoshi smelled the fragrance, she said with surprise, "Brother Pig, long time no see." The joke later spread to the outside world. During the "Cultural Revolution", some people made a big fuss about it, thinking it was "anti-Party and anti-socialist remarks" and criticizing Mr. Hu Xiaoshi, who had passed away.
