The Ten Scenes of the West Lake began with the proposition that Ma Yuan, a painter in the Southern Song Dynasty, painted the scenery of the West Lake, which has been more than 700 years. "Yu Fang Sheng Lan" records: "The West Lake is full of beautiful mountains and rivers, sailing at four o'clock, singing incessantly, and good people have tasted ten questions, including: autumn moon in Pinghu, residual snow on the bridge in Xiao Chun, Su Causeway, sunset at Leifeng, night bell in Nanping, wind lotus in Quyuan, fish watching, willow waves singing, moon printing in Santan, and double peaks inserting clouds." This is the earliest record of the ten scenic spots of the West Lake in local chronicles. In the thirty-eighth year of Kangxi in Qing Dynasty (1699), Emperor Kangxi visited the West Lake in the south, inscribed ten scenic spots, carved stones and built monuments, which have been passed down to this day.
