Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture is an autonomous prefecture (sub-provincial) under the jurisdiction of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, located in the Ili Valley of the northern Tianshan Mountains in the west of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, with a temperate continental climate and a cold climate. It is the only autonomous prefecture in China that governs both regions and counties and cities. It governs 1 1 county-level administrative regions (states) with a total area of 268,593 square kilometers.

Yili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture has the 4th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th Divisions of Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, yili normal university, Xinjiang Mining and Metallurgy Bureau, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Tianshan Western State-owned Forest Management Bureau, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Altai Mountain State-owned Forest Management Bureau, Axi Gold Mine and other units directly under the central government and autonomous region.
