Perseverance in doing something depends not on perseverance

My weight has reached its peak three times in my life, except twice before giving birth, and the other one was in my sophomore year of high school.

My high school implements a semi-military management, and the school is closed. Every Saturday afternoon, after the grade assembly, you can go back and take a good shower. The food in the cafeteria is not good. I remember that lunch at that time was always tomatoes, eggs and shredded potatoes, because other dishes were more difficult to eat. In this way, my weight continued to skyrocket. Except for a slight curve in my chin, everything else was round, especially my thighs. Every time I went home, my family would tease me that they were elephant legs or blue and thin mushrooms.

When I got to college, I finally had the freedom and time to implement a weight loss plan. In an era when the Internet was not yet developed (oh, I am showing my age), I searched everywhere for ways to lose weight, and spent every day hanging out in the fashion magazine section of the library, because fashion magazines of the last century often published "My Articles such as "Weight Loss Diary", "7 Most Effective Ways to Lose Weight" and "Secrets to Lose 10 Pounds in 30 Days".

I drank slimming tea, slimming pills and the like, and found that I was lighter, but frequent stomach upsets made me look sallow. I even ordered a mail-order recipe for the "7-Day Slimming Soup" that was said to be so magical that even celebrities recommended it, but I finally gave up because the dormitory couldn't turn on the fire for cooking. Looking back now, if I only drank water made from cabbage, green peppers, carrots and the like and ate vegetable scraps every day, wouldn't I lose weight after 7 days?

After long-term and unremitting efforts in the spirit of "Shen Nong tastes a hundred herbs", I finally discovered a simple, convenient and effective method (appeared in many articles and verified by many people), It is highly practical (the auxiliary tools are simple and easy to obtain), it does not take too long (within 1 month) to see the effect, and the most important thing is a method that has no side effects and is not easy to rebound: running.

There is a circular playground below the dormitory building where I live. The school did not pave it with plastic, and the track was full of cinders. Despite the difficult conditions, I firmly believe that running can make people lose weight healthily, and the skin will not be loose but tightened. In addition, witnesses have testified that if you run 4-5 laps on a 400-meter track every day, you will noticeably lose weight in a month. , I almost didn’t hesitate and put it into practice immediately.

After self-study at 10 o'clock every night, I started a lonely long-distance run. It was not only lonely but also boring: the mobile phones at that time could not listen to music, and it was too heavy to carry a Walkman and a radio. All I could do was run, my mind unconsciously recalling what happened recently, what happened a few days ago, what happened when I was a child.

As soon as I started running one lap, I was out of breath and could only stop and walk, but I persisted in finishing five laps. Later, it was gradually increased to 2 laps and 5 laps. After running, rest in place and stretch the whole body to avoid muscle agglomeration and turn into frog legs.

Suddenly one day, I put on the short skirt I wore in high school and prepared to go downstairs for a run. I was pleasantly surprised to find that my waist had grown so much that I had to keep lifting it up when I was running. Regarding the pace, I calculated that it was only over 40 days since I first started running.

In addition to the reduction in waist circumference, because I insist on stretching my leg muscles after running, my elephant legs have also become slimmer. I can't help but lift my legs to admire them before going to bed. Fan (ah, so perverted).

The profuse sweating after running made my skin more rosy and shiny, my steps were light, my sleep quality was super high, and I was in high spirits and happy every day (I later learned that this is because exercise causes people to secrete dopamine, a chemical that happiness factor). What’s even more surprising is that I have a physique that is easy to lose weight that everyone envies. Even if I go home during the holidays and gain a few pounds by eating and drinking without exercising, I will lose the weight right away when I go back to school and exercise for a few days.

During college, I ran 10 laps almost every day as long as conditions allowed. With good eating habits, I controlled my weight very well. This was still the case when I was a graduate student. At that time, I saw new things on campus. Don't be too excited about the dark red plastic track. My running habit also allowed me to easily win second place in the 3,000-meter race at the school track and field meet. The counselor said excitedly: Our college has never received any ranking in such activities since its establishment.

People around me saw me running and said: You are so perseverant! In fact, no matter what kind of perseverance is needed, you can’t stop at all! Sometimes because it was raining heavily and I couldn't run, I would be so anxious that I would jump on my feet in the dormitory. I really felt how the boys' feet would feel itchy if they didn't play football.

There are two key words in my experience, one is feedback and the other is hypothesis.

Let’s talk about feedback first.

Some people say it takes 21 days to develop a good habit, while others say it takes 100 days. Although I often hear the phrase "Habits come naturally", what I hear more often is: I can't stick to it at all.

Why? Is it three minutes of heat that leads to the loss of passion? Is it human nature to hate repetition? I think not getting feedback is the real reason.

Human beings naturally like to be satisfied immediately: when they are hungry, they need to eat immediately, and when they are cold, they need to go to a warm place immediately. Because delay means pain.

Many people spend a lot of money to buy annual fitness passes, go there three times, and then let the card get moldy. Because they can't immediately see vest lines and 6-pack abs on their bodies, they feel that fitness is of no use, and then find A lot of reasons came out - busy, far away, tired - to comfort myself, and when I saw those fitness fanatics, I sincerely envy them: They are so perseverant!

Running is also a habit that takes a long time to develop, at least in the medium to long term, because I have received positive feedback from running: I have lost weight, become more beautiful, feel good, have good physical fitness... I have tasted the benefits. , they are more willing to take the initiative to strengthen this positive feedback. If you still need perseverance to support you in the first few days, the later you go, the more you will experience the unstoppable pleasure, which has nothing to do with perseverance.

Let’s talk about assumptions.

Any of our opinions and beliefs are assumptions, not facts. The process of learning and growing is to constantly correct wrong assumptions and make them infinitely closer to the facts. If you accept and admit this, it proves that you are malleable and the resistance to accomplishing something will be much smaller.

Many people think that they are not good at sports, not suitable for running, and have no athletic talent... These may be facts, but they are definitely assumptions in the first place. If others try to convince him that this is not true, it will only inspire him to look for more evidence to prove it. Therefore, when correcting assumptions, you can only use your own subjective initiative, not "you want me to change", but "I want to change".

When it comes to running, I got rid of the prejudice of fixed thinking and rejected the following assumptions: a fat man cannot run; I have never passed the 800-meter test in middle school, and it is impossible to run for that long . But first of all, I firmly believe that running will definitely help me achieve the effect of losing weight and shaping my body. But I have never tried it before. I will know if I try it. If I couldn't run before, is it because my posture is wrong? Then I will learn the correct posture for running.

If you always hold on to past assumptions to guide today's actions, no matter how hard you try, it will be in vain, because doing things that your subconscious does not recognize at all is awkward, so some people say: It takes perseverance to continue doing it. Most of the things won't last long.

Once your fixed thinking is loosened, change will happen naturally.

I have to go for a run.
