The county was first established in the sixth year of Emperor Gaozu of the Han Dynasty (201 BC), because of the "Book of Mountains and Seas" It is named after it is recorded that "there are giants from Jiangxi in the south". Another theory is that the two rivers merged in Ganzhou to form the Ganjiang River, hence its name.
The Western Han Dynasty belonged to Yuzhang County, and the county government was Yixiang River. Mangxin was under the jurisdiction of Jiujiang County. In the Eastern Han Dynasty, it was restored to Yuzhang County. In the second year of Xingping (195), Sun Ce divided Yuzhang County into Luling County, and Gan County belonged to it. In the fifth year of Wu Jiahe's reign (236) in the Three Kingdoms period, Luling County was divided into the southern governorate, and Gan County belonged to it. In the same year, Gan County was analyzed and relocated to Pingyang County (renamed Pinggu County in the first year of Taikang). In the third year of Taikang in the Western Jin Dynasty (282 AD), the southern commandery was renamed as Nankang County, and Gan County was placed under the jurisdiction of Nankang County. Liu Song changed the county into a country, and Gan County belonged to Nankang State. Qi restored Nankang County, Liang and Chen Yinzhi. During the Chen Dynasty, Gan County and Nankang County exchanged their names. In the first year of Daye (605), they restored their original names. In the ninth year of Kaihuang's reign (589), Nankang County was renamed Qianzhou. In the same year, Pinggu County was merged into Gan County. By the Sui and Tang Dynasties, Gan County belonged to Qianzhou. Yang Wu of the Five Dynasties belonged to the Baisheng Army. The Southern Tang Dynasty changed to Zhaoxin Army. In the eighth year of Kaibao's reign in the Song Dynasty (975), it was renamed a state, and Gan County still belonged to Qianzhou.
