Appendix: The old abbot of Tianning Temple eats eggs.
Emperor Qianlong went down to the south of the Yangtze River, passed through Tianning Temple in Changzhou, and made a pilgrimage. The 70-year-old abbot led the monks of the whole temple to meet him. After the ceremony, Gan Long had an idea. He wanted to test whether monks would abide by the imperial edict or observe Buddhist precepts. He ordered his men to take many eggs to the abbot and other monks, and ordered them to write a poem before eating the eggs. The monks all focused on the old abbot in panic. Seeing the old abbot smiling and holding an egg in his hand, he said unhurriedly, "The emperor gave me a peach, seedless and hairless. The old monk will take you to the Western Heaven to avoid being stabbed to death! " Then eat eggs. Emperor Qianlong wanted to confuse the abbot with the fact that it was difficult to tell whether the egg was meat or vegetarian, but the old abbot described the egg as a living vegetarian fruit, which solved the problem of Qianlong. Emperor Qianlong had to give up. Monks in Tianning Temple can eat eggs from now on.
