Habitat in slow-moving streams, ditches, ponds or rice fields. In the larval stage, they gather together and live a floating life, mostly staying at the edge of aquatic plants near the river bank or in the upper waters near the river bank without aquatic plants. At the end of the period, the larvae swim by aquatic plants, including oblique swimming, horizontal swimming, swirling swimming and sometimes lateral jumping, which has certain ability and behavior to avoid the enemy. Young and adult fish live in the middle and lower waters. Tall partridges like to live in groups, but they live in groups during spawning period and have the habit of spawning in mussels.
