Every year after the Mid-Autumn Festival, many people visit the countryside. Every night, in a corner of the village, the sounds of gongs, drums and firecrackers are heard from time to time, followed by the sounds of ringing bells and reading scriptures. This is the ghost exorcism ritual for entering a house in Chaoshan countryside, commonly known as oil fire. Oiling fire is a custom in Chaoshan. After building a new house and moving into the house, the owner must ask Xigong (Master) to come to the house to perform the ritual to drive away evil spirits in the house, so that the family can live safely. Because it is necessary to choose a day to light the oil fire, usually it must be a particularly good day. For example, the "Sheng Ying Mu" in the hall must be chosen on the Shang day. There is a saying in Chaoshan that "come on a small day every three to five years, and come on a big day every five years." This means that good days are hard to come by. The two tasks of entering a new house and lighting it are carried out at the same time. There are also people who build new houses in the countryside and move in before they go through the lighting process. This is called borrowing.
Entering a house (i.e. entering a house) is a relatively grand event in the countryside. Generally, families have three tables and five tables, and invite relatives and friends to gather and eat together to celebrate the occasion. . According to local customs, the host is "not allowed" to accept heavy gifts from relatives and friends. As long as they come, they don't need to bring anything, or just a few eggs. Even if relatives and friends send heavy gifts, the host cannot accept them. Instead, he has to add some money to the red envelope and return the "gifts" back. According to Chaoshan custom, the owner of a house is not allowed to accept gifts. The less likely they are to accept gifts, the better. Therefore, it is a loss to buy a house in Chaoshan area, and it will cost a large sum of money. People who are financially strapped to build a new house can only borrow money to live in the new house. Once they stay, some stay there for three to five years, some for ten or twenty years, and even worse, some for thirty or forty years.
Oil fires are usually carried out at night, because passers-by cannot see or bump into them. When Xigong (Master) drives out ghosts, people in every household hide in their homes and close their doors. I have never seen the oil fire with my own eyes. When I moved into my house, I wandered away and never came back. I heard from my mother that when entering a house to make a fire, you must first prepare five animals and make fruit (a giant fermented bread packed in some kind of ring-shaped vessel) to worship the earth god, which is called thanking the earth.
After the ceremony, Xigong posted talismans with Kuixing kicking and fighting patterns all over the hall to ward off ghosts and evil spirits. Generally, you can tell whether a household has oiled the house after entering the house or not by whether it has affixed magic charms, because these charms cannot be removed by the owner and will stay with the new house for many years. At night, Xigong painted a painted face, wore a red scarf, red armor (vest), red underwear, held a wine bottle, and played gongs and drums. Xigong read scriptures, rang the bell, and murmured something. He was followed by two young men, one carrying a boiling oil pot and a torch, and the other carrying firecrackers. He feigned assassination in one room, drove away evil spirits and stabbed the evil spirit, and then drove him out of the door. While setting off firecrackers, he sprayed salt into the oil pan, crackling and patting, and thick smoke rose everywhere. In this way, Xigong drove the unlucky things out of the house, lit firecrackers and calmed the fire, and then sent them outside the village. He threw the oil pan and other things into the river or woods, and then turned back. At this time, they cannot look back. It is said that if they look back, evil things will come back with them.
After lighting the fire, you enter the house. It is a custom in the countryside to choose a good time and find a relatively "famous" person to lead the way when entering a house. Walk to the new house and call the door, and the person inside will open the door. As soon as the door opened, the person holding the lantern walked in. There was an oil cauldron in the house. One person held a "soft cake" in his hand and put it down, making a sizzling sound, as a good sign.
The elder holding the lantern began to say four sentences, saying words with good meaning and good omen...
