During the Three Kingdoms period, Tengchong belonged to Pan Yue. The name of this country comes from Shu Wei in The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. In the Qing Dynasty, Tengyuewei, Tengyueguo and Tengyueting were established. Tengyuetang leads the seven chiefs of Nandian, Ganya, Zhanda, Longchuan, Mengmao, Husa and Lhasa.
