Liu Chousan (1817--1894), originating from Tianjin, was an amateur actor, whose name was Baoshan, alias Qiansheng, and whose name was Zhixuan. He was known as Baoshan, alias Qiansheng, Yunqing, Zhixuan, and his apartment was called "Baoshentang", located in Hanjiatan, Xuannan. Because of his high art, often invited to many places, he was in three theater groups at the same time to catch the show is a common occurrence, which was satirized as "catch three", but he did not mind, but instead to "Liu Chessan" for the stage name. People often call him "Chessaner", and in his later years, he was called "Old Chess" or "Chess Gong".

He grew up studying very hard, less than 20 years old, already quite talented and famous. He died on the first day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar in the twentieth year of the Guangxu reign at the age of 77.

In the late Qing Dynasty, Liu Chusan was the leading clown in the Peking Opera. The characters acted are all funny and humorous. He was often caught on stage, mocking the rich and powerful, and attacking the ills of the day.

He utilized his good voice and thick singing base to change the past trend of clowns not singing, and established his own section of the art of singing and reading. Liu's recitation, not only his voice is loud and clear, but also according to the character of the characters in the play to create, in order not to be the same, his recitation of most of the play has been processed and modified. For example, he rearranged the large recitation of Chinese medicines in "Invitation to the Doctor" so that the names of the medicines were arranged in an interesting and witty manner. Of course, this has to do with the fact that he was born as a pharmacist and was familiar with the names of medicines. His enriched and modified "Inviting the Doctor" has been handed down to the stage today. Liu's facial expressions and figures are the result of careful observation and refinement in real life.
