Hairy potato, Chinese medicine name. It is the tuber of Dioscorea alata L., a plant of the genus Dioscorea, family Dioscoreaceae. It has the effect of strengthening the spleen and stopping diarrhea, benefiting the lungs and nourishing the kidneys, and detoxifying and astringing sores. It is used for treating diarrhea in spleen deficiency, spermatorrhea in kidney deficiency, hypogonadism, frequent urination, coughing in deficiency, thirst, sores and ulcers, and soup and fire injuries.
Jiang yam, a kind of potato in the Chaoshan area of Guangdong's eastern Guangdong province, is also commonly known as Xiao Huai Shan in some areas. The soup is thick and sticky, smooth in the mouth, sweet and fragrant, and thus loved by young and old. From the plant's morphology, jiang yam and yam are very similar, are twining vine plants, but jiang yam production is rare, jiang yam leaves heart-shaped alternate to tubers for food or medicinal purposes, tubers peeled milky white, rich in mucus.
