When the Great Soviet Union was the third largest wine producer in the world, it provided one-fifth of the wine for the Soviet Union. Grape cultivation in Moldova has a history of more than 5,000 years and enjoys a high reputation in the former Soviet Union and Eastern European countries. Moldova wine has pure taste, high quality and low price, which can be compared with French wine. 95% of the wines produced are exported, more than 90% are exported to CIS countries, and most of them are exported to Russia. Moldova once had the reputation of "the wine cellar of the former Soviet Union" and enjoyed a high reputation in all European countries, especially Russia, where more than half of the wines were imported from Moldova.
