Four, Dongji Sijing

The Dongji Sijing describes the geographic distribution of eight mountains from Beihaoshan to Taishan***. They are located in present-day Shandong, Hebei and Jiangsu.

These mountains and the nearby waters contain many strange beasts, such as the Common Gromwell in the Eastern Beginning Mountains, the Acipenser in the Female Mass Mountains, the Dangkang beast in the Qin Mountains, which is shaped like a pig with fangs, and the Goshawk beast in the Taishan Mountains, which is shaped like a cow with one eye.

4.42 And east of the first of the four meridians, said the mountain of the North trumpet, facing the North Sea. There is a wood, its shape like Yang, red China, in fact, like jujube without a core, its flavor is sour and sweet, food does not malaria. Food water out of the country, and the northeast flow into the sea. There is a beast, its shape is like a wolf, red head and mouse eyes, its sound is like a dolphin, the name is snout (gé) snip (jū), is cannibalism. There is a bird whose shape is like a chicken with a white head, a mouse's foot and a tiger's claw, and whose name is 鬿 (qí) sparrow, and it also eats people.

Translation

The first mountain in the Eastern Second Sijing is called Beihuoshan (probably a mound on the banks of the Xiaoqing River in Laizhou Bay, north of Shandong), which is near the North Sea (the name of the water, today's Laizhou Bay).

There is a tree in the mountain, shaped like a poplar tree, with red flowers and fruits similar to jujube, but there is no nucleus inside, and it tastes sweet and sour, so people will not suffer from malaria if they eat it.

The edible water (the name of the water. It is said that it refers to the Xiaoqing River) originates from here and flows into the sea to the northeast.

In the mountains, there is a beast with a shape similar to that of a wolf, a red head, mouse-like eyes, and a sound similar to that of a pig's squeal; this beast is called the snout-nosed snipe, and it can eat people.

There is a bird in the mountains that is shaped like a chicken, with a white head, mouse-like feet, and tiger-like claws.

4.43 Another 300 li south, said banner (máo) mountain, no grass. Cang body of water out of Yan, and the west flow into the Zhan water, which more 鱃 (qiū) fish, its shape like carp and big head, eaters do not warts.

Translation

Three hundred miles further south there is a mountain called Banner Mountain (one says it is north of present-day Zhangjiakou; the other says it is south of present-day Outer Xing'anling), where no grass grows.

Cangtisui (said to be a tributary of the Yanghe River in present-day Hebei) originated here, and flowed westward into Zhanshui (the name of the water, said to be the present-day Jieya River, which feeds into the Heilongjiang River), and in the water there were a lot of catfish (sea catfish), which were similar in shape to carp, with a big head, and after consuming them, one would not grow a wart.

4.44 Another three hundred and twenty miles south, said the mountain of Dongshi, on which there is a lot of pale jade. There is a wood, its shape like Yang and the red reason, its juice is like blood, not solid, its name is Panicum (qǐ), can serve the horse. The bright and brilliant (zǐ) water comes out of the country and flows northeast into the sea, where there are many beautiful shells and gromwell (zǐ) fish, whose shape is like perch (fù), a song and ten bodies, whose odor (xiù) is like elk and turnips, and which are not eaten. (The first is the "pì" (pì, same as "fart"), which means "fart".

In the mountain there was a tree similar in shape to the poplar tree, with a red texture, whose sap was like blood, and which bore no fruit; its name was Panicum, and its sap could be used to make horses tame.

The bright and brilliant water (the name of the water. It is said to refer to the Zishui of present-day Hebei) originates from here and flows into the sea to the northeast. There are many beautiful shellfish creatures in the water, and there are also many Common Gromwell fish, which is shaped like a carp, has one head and ten bodies, and can emit a conflagration-like odor, so that a person who eats it can refrain from farting.
