Jianyang City is a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Sichuan Province, and is administered by Chengdu City.In May 2016, with the approval of the State Council and the People's Government of Sichuan Province, Jianyang City was administered by Chengdu City. Located in the western part of the Sichuan Basin, at the eastern foot of Longquan Mountain and the middle reaches of the Tuo River, Jianyang City is bordered by Jintang County, Longquanyi District and Shuangliu District in the north, Lezhi County of Ziyang City in the east, Yanjiang District of Ziyang City in the south, and Renshou County of Meishan City in the west.

Jianyang City is an independent county-level city, but administratively under the responsibility of Chengdu City. The geographic location of Jianyang City makes it an important part of Chengdu City's regional development plan, especially in the construction of Chengdu City's New Eastern District and Tianfu New District. The change in the vicarious relationship of Jianyang City reflects Chengdu City's strategic adjustment in regional integration development and the importance it places on the future development of Jianyang City.
