The method of growing potatoes is as follows:
Tools: potatoes, knife, soil, organic fertilizer.
1. Choose potatoes
Potatoes are generally propagated using tubers, so you need to buy the potatoes for planting in advance (you can use the leftover sprouted potatoes at home), choose and buy Potatoes used for planting are also particular. It is best to meet these two points:
1. The skin is not damaged.
2. Potatoes have a lot of holes (that is, the pits on the potato surface).
Note: It would be better if you find buds.
2. Cut the potatoes into pieces
It is best not to stuff the purchased potatoes directly into the soil. You need to cut them into several small pieces for sowing. There is also a need to pay attention to the cutting. If you look at a potato carefully, you will find that there are some "little eyes" on the surface of the potato. These "little eyes" are actually the sprout eyes of the potato, which will depend on the potato's sprouting and rooting in the future. Therefore, when cutting into pieces, each piece must contain sprout eyes. OK.
Remarks:
1. Don’t rush to plant after cutting. Let it dry for about 1 day before planting. This way, the wounds of the potatoes will heal naturally and will not rot in the soil ( You can also put it in a cool place to let the surface dry, but it will take longer).
2. It is better if small buds emerge during the drying process. If not, you can put them in the soil and germinate again.
3. Sowing
Bury the potato tubers into the prepared soil (basic fertilizer has been mixed), with the potato buds (buds) facing upward, with a density of about 15-20 cm. , then cover it with soil (just cover it with 3 cm thick soil), water it thoroughly, and place it in a sunny and warm place. When the temperature is too low, the sowing container can be covered with plastic film to keep it warm and moisturized.
Note: Do not plant potatoes too close to the edge to avoid affecting the growth of the root system.
4. Germination and time
After about three or four weeks, the potatoes will basically sprout. The average variety of potatoes will grow 3 to 5 new sprouts. Leaves start to grow on the day. When the new buds grow to about 10cm high, you need to "thin the buds" (also called thinning). Just keep 2 new buds. If you don't thin the buds, several buds will grow together and produce many small potatoes. , but they don’t grow very big.
Remarks:
1. After thinning the buds, you can add new soil appropriately to ensure space for potato growth and development.
2. When thinning the buds, be careful not to damage the remaining new buds. You can press the soil and pull the buds out sideways.
5. Turn the soil (also called soil cultivation)
Turn the soil: loosen the planting soil, turn up the soil below, and cover the roots of the potatoes.
The purpose of turning the soil: on the one hand, it can prevent the potatoes growing on the surface from being exposed to the sun. If the potatoes are exposed to the sun, the potatoes will easily turn green. On the other hand, it can also prevent lodging.
Remarks: Turn the soil for the first time when the seedlings are about 10-15 cm tall, and turn the soil for the second time when the seedlings are about 25 cm tall.
6. Topdressing
After a period of time, during the flower bud and blooming periods, depending on the size of the potatoes or the speed of their growth, you can apply fertilizer once each to make the potatoes grow longer. If it is larger, you can apply more phosphorus and potassium fertilizers in a focused manner, and you can also apply more nitrogen fertilizers appropriately.
Note: You can make your own natural pesticides, such as bitter melon liquid, garlic liquid, onion liquid, etc., and pour them on the roots of the plants to prevent and control underground pests.
7. Harvest
When the potato leaves turn yellow and fall very seriously, you can start digging potatoes. It is best to choose a good day to harvest potatoes and dig out the potatoes. Dry them in the sun when you are ready, so that the potatoes will not spoil easily (you can also dig them while eating, it will not have much impact if you dig them out later).
