Perennial herb, up to 60 to 70 centimeters high, the whole plant sparsely covered with short hairs. Underground rhizome spreading. Stem quadrangular, slender, erect or oblique, slightly branched. Single leaves opposite; elliptic or ovate-square, leaf blade up to 3-10 cm long, margin serrate, both surfaces sparsely covered with short hairs, base subcordate or obtuse; sessile or subsessile. Spikes terminal, florets arranged in whorls on the rachis, sequences up to 5-10 turns long; calyx 5-toothed, covered with short hairs; corolla 4-lobed, white or light red; stamens 4, filaments protruding from the corolla; ovary 4-lobed. Nutlets ovoid, surface smooth. Fl. July.
