Extended information
Donkey-hide gelatin is named after it was originally produced in Dong'e. China's earliest extant pharmacological monograph "Shen Nong's Materia Medica" lists donkey-hide gelatin as "top grade". Li Shizhen's "Compendium of Materia Medica" in the Ming Dynasty records: "Donkey-hide gelatin is top grade. Hong Jing said: "It comes from Dong'e, so it is named donkey-hide gelatin." According to historical records, Li Shizhen was born in 1518 and died in 1593.
There is also an ancient folk song circulating in Dong'a, "A little black donkey, with a white belly, a pink nose, pink eyes, and pink hooves, comes to eat grass on the Lion's Ear Mountain, and drinks water from the Langxi River. We walked three times on the Ji Bridge, rolled in the Wei family farm, and slaughtered them in the winter to get their skins. In the process of making glue, we used gold pots and silver shovels, burned mulberry wood, chopped firewood, and boiled it for seventy-four years. It takes nineteen days to form glue.
