Chengdu Climate

Chengdu city has a subtropical monsoon climate, characterized by early spring, hot summer, cool autumn and warm winter, with an average annual temperature of 16℃ and an annual rainfall of about 1,000mm. Chengdu's climate is a significant feature of cloudy and foggy, short sunshine hours. The folk proverb "Sichuan dog barks at the sun" is a graphic description of this climate feature.

Another distinctive feature of Chengdu's climate is the humidity of the air, which makes the summer months hot and muggy even though the temperatures are not too high (the maximum temperature is usually no more than 35 degrees Celsius), and the winter months, when the temperature averages more than 5 degrees Celsius, are cold and gloomy due to the cloudy skies and the humidity of the air. Rain in Chengdu is concentrated in the months of July and August, with drought and little rain in winter and spring, and very little snow or ice.

In 2020, the average annual temperature in Chengdu will be 15.5-18.2℃; the extreme annual maximum temperature will be 36.6-39.5℃, and the extreme annual minimum temperature will be -3.5-0.3℃; the hottest month occurs in June-August, and the coldest month occurs in January. Chengdu belongs to the subtropical humid monsoon climate zone, and the most wind direction in Chengdu is south wind all year round.
