Origin of Mother's Day
Mother's Day originated in the U.S. On May 9, 1906, Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia, U.S.A. was devastated by the tragic death of her mother. On the anniversary of her mother's death the following year, Miss Anna organized a memorial service for her mother and encouraged others to express their gratitude to their loving mothers in a similar way.
On May 10, 1913, the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate passed a resolution and President Wilson signed a proclamation deciding that the second Sunday in May would be Mother's Day. This initiative has caused countries around the world to follow suit, and by the time Anna died in 1948, 43 countries had established Mother's Day.
The Social Impact of Mother's Day
Filial piety has always been an important part of traditional Chinese culture, and a stable social and cultural psychological foundation for a country. Chinese filial piety, represented by the new "24 Filial Piety", has become the code of happiness for Chinese families. Experts say that the value of Chinese filial piety culture needs to be re-examined against the backdrop of the prevalence of Western guilt culture. As China enters a new era, the traditional filial culture needs to be further creative inheritance and promotion.
"Economic provisioning, life care, and spiritual comfort are the basic elements of filial piety practiced by Chinese people from ancient times to the present. Taking filial piety as the foundation is a humanistic norm that has a long history in the Chinese nation." For some foreigners, the term "filial piety" with Chinese characteristics is still a novelty.
In China, parents want their children to have a better life, and children want their parents to be happy in their old age, so the majority of filial piety is 'altruistic', based on blood ties and ethical missions, and does not ask for anything in return. In Western culture, the corresponding references to 'filial piety' are piety, gratitude, etc., and this 'Western-style filial piety' is mostly 'self-interested filial piety' based on market-oriented rules and the fulfillment of legal obligations ."
"There are also differences between Chinese and Western views of family." Since ancient times, Chinese people have attached great importance to family and blood kinship relations, with the family as the core layer of outward expansion, forming a close relationship based on human feelings of family-family-society-state. The family has become the origin of people's spiritual home. Western culture, on the other hand, emphasizes the individual as the core, the establishment of a contractual relationship between people on the basis of law, this relationship is loose, so the concept of family is not strong.
