What is the intertidal zone?
Intertidal zone refers to the coast between the average highest tidal level and the lowest tidal level, that is, the range from the place where the seawater rises to the highest tidal level to the place where the tide retreats to the lowest tidal level. Above the intertidal zone, the coast where wave water droplets can reach is called the tidal zone. Below the intertidal zone, it extends to a depth of about 30 meters in the sea, which is called the subtidal zone.

After the low tide, a small pool with accumulated water above the low tide line is called a tidal pool. The living things in tidal ponds must have the ability to tolerate the daily temperature difference and the drastic change of oxygen content. The habitat here is sometimes dry and sometimes humid, with high temperature and low salinity. It can be said that the microenvironment has changed greatly. Around the world, people use the unique ecological environment of intertidal zone to carry out aquaculture activities, forming a common cultural landscape along the coast.

Three intervals

Tidal flat wetland is an important part of coastal zone, including all intertidal zone, supratidal zone and subtidal zone. The part available for development and utilization usually refers to the part above the sm isobath.

The intertidal zone is the zone between the high tide line and the low tide line, which is commonly called the beach. According to the law of tidal activity, the intertidal zone is divided into the following three areas:

1. High tide area (upper area): located at the uppermost part of intertidal zone, with high tide line at the upper boundary and low tide line at the lower boundary. It was submerged by the sea for a short time, only in the spring tide.

2. Mid-tidal zone: It occupies most of the intertidal zone, with high tide line at the upper boundary and low tide line at the lower boundary, and is a typical intertidal zone.

3. Low tide area (lower area): the upper boundary is the low tide line of small tide, and the lower boundary is the low tide line of big tide. Immersed in water most of the time, only exposed to water for a short time when the tide rises and falls.
