As soon as the whistle for dinner rang and gongs were struck, the whole village took bowls and chopsticks and hurried from home to the collective canteen for dinner, laughing and talking. The dining hall of the people's commune lasted for three years and finally disintegrated automatically.

Commune transformation

1982 The Constitution stipulates that township governments and villagers' committees of mass autonomous organizations shall be established in rural areas, and grass-roots political organs and regional cooperative economic organizations shall be established separately. At this point, the people's commune, characterized by the unity of politics and society and the unified management of the collective, was disintegrated. At the end of 1984, the rural areas in China completed the transformation from commune to township.
