Extended body, with a bluntly rounded head that is slightly flattened anteriorly. Head broad, covered with bony plates; muzzle broad and short. Eyes small, situated on dorsum of head. Mouth medium-large, subvertical; posterior margin of anterior nostril with a nasal flap; upper and lower jaws, hoe bones and palatine bones with chorionic teeth; mandibular accessory flap undeveloped. Lower margin of anterior gill cover bone without spines. Posterior shoulder without pinnate valve above. Gill membrane separate from isthmus. Body covered with small round scales, but not arranged in oblique rows, head, dorsal neck and thorax without scales; lateral line superiorly lateral. Dorsal fin one, without hard spines, with only soft bars 13 or 14; anal fin soft bars 16-18; pectoral fin soft bars 22-24; caudal fin truncate, posterior margin slightly convex. Dorsal surface greenish, with many irregular blue-green spots, ventral surface light greenish gray; dorsal fin yellowish; anal, pectoral and ventral fins light brown; caudal fin greenish gray.

It is found in the Indo-West Pacific region, including Indonesia, Japan and the Ryukyu Islands to the East China Sea.
