From the end of November to the beginning of December, it is necessary to apply overwintering fertilizer after picking melons, so that the roots at the bottom of the chayote can accumulate sufficient nutrients and improve its cold resistance during the winter. When fertilizing, remove weeds and dead branches from the melon garden and burn them or bury them deeply. Apply phoxim near the base of the stem to poison pests in the soil. Before frost and snow come, cover it with about 12-15cm of straw and then cover it with a layer of film to help it survive the winter smoothly.
1. Method
1. Apply overwintering fertilizer: From the end of November to the beginning of December, after picking melons, you need to apply overwintering fertilizer. You can choose fertile leaf water-soluble fertilizer. Allow the roots at the bottom of the chayote to accumulate sufficient nutrients and improve its cold resistance during the winter.
2. Clear the garden and kill insects: When fertilizing, clean up the weeds and dead branches in the melon garden and burn them intensively or bury them deeply. And phoxim can be used near the base of the plant stem to poison the pests in the soil.
3. Covering and anti-freeze: Before the arrival of frost and snow, you can cover the melon field with straw for about 12-15cm, then cover it with a film, and use soil blocks to press the film around to prevent the wind from blowing away and help it survive the winter smoothly. Wait until the temperature rises before removing the covering.
2. How to manage
1. After harvesting the chayote, cut off the excess branches and vines, leaving only the main vines of about two meters. This can reduce the nutrient consumption of the above-ground parts and help the chayote ratoon roots to survive the winter safely. Then remove the support and fertilize the soil.
2. When plowing the ground, keep the roots properly and plow the ground from 30cm away from the plant to ensure the normal germination of chayote in the future.
3. Maintain the temperature. When planting in the greenhouse, you need to ensure that the greenhouse temperature is not too low. Then spray the tree protector and other chemicals for disinfection to prevent the colonization and reproduction of pathogens and promote the germination of new shoots of chayote.
4. About 10 days before the onset of cold winter, the melon garden should be watered once. The soil needs to be moist. Proper watering can increase soil moisture and heat. It should not be too wet to avoid root rot.
