In the eighteenth year of Emperor Kai of Sui Dynasty (598), Maoming County was established. Named after Pan Maoming to commemorate Pan Maoming's kindness to the people in western Guangdong. In the eighth year of Zhenguan in Tang Dynasty (634), Pan Maoming changed Nantangzhou (Gaozhou changed Nantangzhou in the sixth year of Zhenguan) to Panzhou. Today, the name of Maoming city also comes from this. In China, Pan Maoming is the only person who established a state, county and prefecture-level city in the name of a Taoist.

The Historical Evolution of Maoming City
Maoming County, People's Republic of China (PRC), successively belongs to Lu Nan, Gao Lei, western Guangdong and Zhanjiang.
On May 1958, Maoming Preparatory Office was established.
1975 upgraded to a prefecture-level city. 1983 implemented the system of city governing counties, which governed Dianbai, Gaozhou, Xinyi and Huazhou counties. 1985, Maonan District of Maoming City was established (Maonan, named after being located in the south of the original Maoming County).
1993- 1995 During the three years, Gaozhou, Huazhou and Xinyi successively withdrew from counties to establish cities, all of which were county-level cities under the management of Maoming City.
