Tongue Sole -----------

MorphologyThe body is prolonged, very laterally compressed and tongue-shaped. Adults have both eyes on the left side of the head. The muzzle is prominent with a rounded tip. The mouth is small and inferior. The lower jaw is often surrounded by the hook-like process of the muzzle. The upper and lower jaw teeth on the eyeless side are small and fluffy, forming a band of teeth. Eyes small, upper eyes not close to dorsal margin of head. Margins of anterior gill cover not free. Dorsal and anal fins fully attached to caudal fin. Pectoral fins absent, ventral fins seen only on eyed side. Scales tiny, mostly pectinate. Only a few species of half-smooth tongue sole and broad-bodied tongue sole have pectinate scales on the eyed side and rounded scales on the eyeless side. The remaining species have pectinate scales on both sides. The eyed side often has two or three lateral lines, and the eyeless side has one or two lateral lines, or no lateral lines.
