Lotus root is a plant that likes light and is not tolerant to shade. It requires sufficient sunshine during the growing period and is not strict about the length of sunshine. Adequate light in the early stage is beneficial to the growth of stems and leaves. Sufficient light in the later stage is beneficial to flowering, fruiting and lotus root enrichment.
Lotus root must not be short of water during the whole growth period. Shallow water is needed in the germination and growth stage, and the water level is 5- 10cm. As plants enter the vigorous growth period, the water level is required to gradually deepen to 30-50 cm. In the future, as the plants bloom, bear fruit and bear lotus roots, the water level will gradually decrease until the lotus roots hibernate and overwinter.
Loam and clay loam rich in organic matter are most suitable for the growth of lotus root. The soil organic matter content should be at least above 1.5%, and the soil pH value should be between 5.6 and 7.5, with 6.5 being the most suitable.
