It is forbidden to illegally kill wild animals or destroy their habitats. Any organization or individual has the right to report or accuse violations of this law to relevant departments and organs. The competent department of wildlife protection and other relevant departments and organs shall promptly handle reports or complaints according to law. The state protects wild animals by classification and grading. The state gives priority to the protection of rare and endangered wild animals. National key protected wild animals are divided into first-class protected wild animals and second-class protected wild animals.
The list of national key protected wild animals is formulated by the competent department of wildlife protection in the State Council after scientific evaluation, and is adjusted every five years according to the evaluation. The list of national key protected wild animals was reported to the State Council for approval and publication. Wild animals under special local protection refer to those under special protection by provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government, except those under special national protection. The list of local key protected wild animals shall be formulated, adjusted and published by the people's governments of provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government after scientific evaluation. The list of terrestrial wild animals with important ecological, scientific and social values shall be formulated, adjusted and published by the competent department of wildlife protection in the State Council after scientific evaluation.

Criminal law of the people's Republic of China
Article 341 Whoever illegally hunts or kills rare and endangered wildlife under special state protection, or illegally buys, transports or sells rare and endangered wildlife under special state protection and its products, shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not more than five years or criminal detention and shall also be fined; If the circumstances are serious, he shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not less than five years but not more than ten years and shall also be fined; If the circumstances are especially serious, he shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not less than 10 years and shall also be fined or confiscated. Whoever, in violation of hunting laws and regulations, hunts in a no-hunting area or during a no-hunting period or uses prohibited tools and methods to destroy wildlife resources, if the circumstances are serious, shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not more than three years, criminal detention, public surveillance or a fine. Whoever, in violation of the laws and regulations on wildlife protection and management, illegally hunts, buys, transports or sells terrestrial wild animals that naturally grow and breed in the wild environment for the purpose of eating, if the circumstances are serious, shall be punished in accordance with the provisions of the preceding paragraph.
