The cypress tree is native to northwestern China and is widely distributed in the Asian continent, including the Korean Peninsula, Japan, northern India, northern Iran, as well as in Inner Mongolia, Jilin, Liaoning, Hebei, Shanxi, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Anhui, Jiangxi, Henan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, and Tibet in mainland China. It grows in areas from 100 meters to 3440 meters above sea level, mostly on roadsides, mountain slopes, open forests on mountain slopes, mixed forests, mixed coniferous and broad forests, and limestone slopes (mostly sunny slopes),it is now widely cultivated as an ornamental tree species.
Light-loving, but seedlings, young trees have a certain degree of shade tolerance, generally growing in the shade of the mountain, more cold-resistant, less wind-resistant, drought-resistant, humidity-loving, but does not tolerate flooding, tolerate infertility, and can be grown on slightly acidic to slightly alkaline soil.
