Siniperca chuatsi lives in fast-flowing rivers and mountain streams. It is a benthic fish and likes to live in groups. It often appears in the gap between rocks, forages on the substrate at the bottom of gravel, scrapes raw algae by using the sharp horny edge of mandible, and also eats branches and leaves of higher plants, debris and so on. After the winter, ten tail and even hundreds of Chinese shad spend the winter in deep-water caves, and rarely go out for activities. Sexual maturity can be achieved at the age of 2. Parent fish flock into tributaries from April to June to lay eggs, and the spawning ground is the tail of rapids with gravel bottom. It is distributed in the main stream and tributaries of the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, especially in the mountainous streams with fast-flowing water and clear water quality in the East Sichuan Basin.
