There are various kinds of monosaccharides in living organisms, such as ribose and deoxyribose which are monosaccharides that contain five carbon atoms. Glucose, fructose and galactose are monosaccharides containing 6 carbon atoms.
Monosaccharides are the smallest molecules in this category because they cannot be hydrolyzed into smaller carbohydrates. They are some aldehydes or ketones with two or more hydroxyl groups.
The chemical formula of unmodified monosaccharides can be expressed as (CH2O)n, and they are called: "carbohydrates" because they are all multiples of carbon and water molecules. Monosaccharides are an important fuel molecule and structural fragments of nucleic acids. The smallest monosaccharides have n=3 in them, i.e.: dihydroxyacetone or D- and L-glyceraldehyde.
