What is the Prostitution Festival in Dongguan?

Prostitution Festival, a festival in Dongkeng Town, Dongguan City, Guangdong Province, originated in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties.

Legend has it that the "Prostitution Festival" came from Tangchun Village, Dongkeng. A large family named Lu was rushing to start farming before Qingming Festival. On the second day of the second lunar month, a notice was posted in front of Tangchun Village to hire long-term agricultural workers. Since then, it has become a habit for young people who have no land to sit on the fence in front of Tanglip Village on the second day of February, wearing hats and coarse cloth towels to show their "prostitution" and sell their labor, waiting for the rich man to hire them. On this day, the rich man with land went to Tanglip Village to select young adults who would "sell themselves" and release cowboys for one year, which is called "selling themselves".

After several vicissitudes of life, the second day of February in Dongkeng was called "Prostitution Festival", also known as "Fairy Meeting Festival", and later changed to "Turning over Festival". In recent years, it was renamed "Happy Festival", and tourists love to shoot water with toy water guns in the street, so it is also called "Water Shooting Festival". People who have been to the Happy Festival on the second day of February all hope that on this day, the water in Dongkeng will be sprinkled with good luck and brought back with it.
