Hou Baolin (November 29, 1917—February 4, 1993), Manchu, a famous crosstalk master and performing artist in China, was born in Tianjin in 1917. Because of his poor family, he was sent to Hou's home outside Di 'anmen in Beijing by his uncle Zhang Jinbin at the age of four. The adoptive father worked as a cook in Taubeile House, and his family was poor. Since I was sensible, I have suffered the hardships of the life of the urban poor. In 1929, when he was just eleven years old, he took Yan Zefu as his teacher and studied Peking Opera. Do odd jobs, boil water, cook and look after children all day. At the same time, I go to the Temple of Heaven to sneak my voice every day and practice Peking Opera performance programs such as "Cloud Hand" and "Rise to Power".
After several years of hard work, Hou Baolin's cross talk has finally become the "big axis" of any variety. From the late Qing Dynasty to the 194s, according to the old rules, the acrobatic garden in Tianjin has always been sung by Liu Baoquan and Bai Yunpeng. No matter how good the crosstalk is, it can only be ranked as the last two. However, Hou Yizhuo's unique art broke through the old rules and added luster to the crosstalk.
Hou Baolin is regarded as a pioneering master of phonology and a master of language. During his long 6-year artistic career, he devoted himself to studying and developing the art of cross talk and bringing laughter to the audience. A group of crosstalk artists, represented by him, made this art really enter thousands of households and reached a remarkable artistic peak. He devoted all his life to the cause of cross talk. Besides creating and performing a large number of well-known cross talk segments, he also made a theoretical study on the origin, laws and artistic skills of cross talk and folk art. He also pays attention to cultivating the younger generation, and some famous artists who are active in the cross talk stage are his students. Before his death, he was a member of the Third Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, a deputy to the Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Seventh National People's Congress, an artistic director of China Broadcasting Art Troupe and an adjunct professor of Peking University. He died of illness on February 4, 1993. Dictate the "last words" before dying: "I, Hou Baolin, have been talking about cross talk all my life and have studied cross talk all my life. At the age of 12, Hou Baolin began to learn arts, first learning Peking Opera, and later, because of his passion for cross talk, he changed to cross talk. He studied under Chang Baochen and Zhu Kuoquan successively, and once performed in Beijing Tianqiao and Gulou, saying stand-up crosstalk, just like many folk artists in the old society, to earn money and support their families.
During his stay in War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, Hou Baolin cooperated with Guo Qiru to perform in Beijing and Tianjin, and his art became more and more mature and became famous. Moreover, he changed the vulgar atmosphere of cross talk at that time and won wide acclaim for his elegant taste and simple and decent style.
After the founding of New China, Hou Baolin was even more full of artistic youth, and soon became a well-known master of art at home and abroad. Since then, he has been determined to reform crosstalk. On the one hand, he has modified and processed some traditional crosstalk, and on the other hand, he has created some new crosstalk that reflects real life, such as Marriage and Superstition and Together.

In his later years, Hou Baolin mainly engaged in the theoretical research of Quyi. He co-authored Introduction to Quyi, Tracing the Origin of Crosstalk, Collection of Crosstalk Art, etc. Crosstalk collections include Selected Crosstalk Performed by Hou Baolin and Guo Qiru, Selected Crosstalk of Hou Baolin, etc., which include such well-known cross talk masterpieces as Drama Miscellaneous Talks, Night Travels, Guan Gong vs. Qin Qiong, etc. In addition, he also starred in comedy films such as "Dream in the Garden" and "Laughter".
Hou Baolin is good at imitating various dialects, city sounds and theatrical performances. He speaks cross talk, with clear language, natural movements, free and easy manner, harmonious combination of Zhuang and Zhuang, and unique artistic charm. He paid attention to the knowledge, interest and criticism of cross talk, which played a role in the development of cross talk art.
On February 4th, 1993, Hou Baolin died at the age of 77. He is an artist of the people. All his life, he took "bringing laughter and joy to the people" as his goal, and he was respected and loved by people of all ethnic groups throughout the country. We will always miss him.
