Square cookies are a specialty delicacy in Chiayi, Taiwan. They are multi-layered biscuits made of flour, butter or lard, sesame and sugar.
The early square cakes were square, palm-sized, thick and crispy cake-like snacks. They originated from Minguo Road in Chiayi. The most popular noodles and steamed buns on this street are also known as the "Noodle Street"

The more famous old specialty shops in Chiayi are: Grace: the founding old shop, famous for its handmade square cakes.
It was once the designated snack at state banquets.
The shop was moved from Minguo Road to Zhongshan Road.
Lao Yang: Founded in 1979 on Chiayi Civilian Road, it is best known for its research and development of various flavors and new styles. In 2004, it exclusively developed the "Double-layered Heart-Breaking Square Crispy" with an outer layer of wheat fiber and an inner layer blended with Alishan cherry blossoms.
The fruit is exquisitely baked and innovatively produced with dual flavors. It is a local specialty of Xindao, Alishan.
Snowflake: First of all, mini square puff pastry is used, which has thin skin and rich flavor, subverting the traditional shape of square puff pastry.
