Translation:

In life, the body is wrapped in coarse clothes and poor cloth, and the temperament of learning in the chest is naturally glamorous. I don't like to accompany the old Confucian to talk about the bitter days of "cooking leaves" and decided to take the imperial examination with the scholars.

I don't have money in my pocket to buy the "flower-looking" horse, but I will look at the dazzling "husband-choosing car". I can still boast to the secular people in the exam, and my name is written in crow's black letters on the imperial edict.

Creation background

The poem "Farewell with Dong Chuan" was given to Dong Chuan by Su Shi after he was dismissed from office and Fengxiang signed a contract to go to Bianjing, passing through Chang 'an. In the sixth year of Jiayou (161), Su Shi took the examination of the middle school system, which is usually called "three-year Beijing inspection", and entered the third class. He awarded Dali the judge and signed the book, and Dong Chuanshi accompanied him. Dong Chuan was down and out in Fengxiang and was preparing to take the imperial examination. Su Shi wrote this poem after returning to Chang 'an the following year.
