What's a girl?

Xiangpu female pronunciation: xún? pǔ? Nǚ

I. Brief introduction of Liaopu girl

Liaopu girl is one of the three major fishing girls in China, and is the name of the fishing girl in Liaopu village, Quanzhou, Fujian. Legend has it that they are descendants of ancient Arabs, and they still retain the custom of wearing hairpin flowers around their heads.

The custom of women in Liaopu is one of the intangible cultural heritages of the country. Liaopu retains many traditional customs in southern Fujian, with unique wedding customs, Chinese New Year customs, festive customs and sacrificial ceremonies, among which the wedding custom of "getting married in the middle of the night" and the sacrificial ceremony of "Mazu patrolling incense" are the most prominent.

Early girls in Liaopu grew their hair long when they were children. When they were eleven or two years old, they put it behind their heads, tied a red head rope and combed it into a bun. Then they put on a "bone bun" and strung it into a garland with flower buds or buds, ranging from one or two rings to four or five rings, and then circled around the bun.

Next, insert a few bright red and pink hairpin flowers, silk flower or flowers around the bun, and then insert a pair of gold or silver hair pins or combs. The whole head is dressed like a small flower bed full of spring, beautiful and fragrant.

ⅱ. Liaopu Village

Liaopu Village, Fengze District, Quanzhou City, Fujian Province has a history of thousands of years. During the Song and Yuan Dynasties, it was the location of the Erythrina Port, which is known as the largest port in the East, and countless ocean-going merchant ships set out here.

The people of Liaopu "depend on the sea to eat the sea, and the sea is their farmland", and it takes her husband days or months to go fishing or ocean-going business. No matter the winter and summer months and the ebb of the tide, the women in Beipu carry fish baskets, roll up their trousers and walk barefoot among the "oyster plants" to raise oysters and grow sea otters. For a long time, Jiupu women have shown the graceful demeanour of Minnan women who are hard-working, enterprising, filial and respectful to the elderly, and virtuous.
