Historical origin
Anyue stone carving began in the Southern and Northern Dynasties in the second year of Liang Dynasty (52 1), and flourished in Tang, Five Dynasties and Northern Song Dynasty, with few works in Ming and Qing Dynasties. Its content is mainly Buddhist statues, integrating Taoist statues in one furnace, most of which are cliff statues.
The statues of Buddha, Bodhisattva, Lohan, Jin Xian, Lux, Tian Fei, protector and provider in the grottoes not only reflect the world of Buddhist temples, but also reflect the social reality and secular life in ancient China from different angles. These figures are vivid and interesting, exquisitely carved, skillful and ingenious, and they are valuable heritages of carving art in ancient grottoes and temples in China.
After 2000, many carving teams such as Anyue Zizhuge Stone Carving Art Exhibition Center and Shushi Carving Workshop were established one after another, which opened the sales market of stone carving art, promoted the development of tourism and promoted the all-round development of Anyue's economy and culture. With the support of the government, the stone carving art industry has become one of the pillars of Anyue tourism industry.
