Overview of Duanyan Cultural Village
Baishi Village faces Beiling Mountain and backs to Xijiang River, covering an area of about 1.2 square kilometers. It was built by Tang Wude, with 288 households, more than 1 100 people. The villagers in Baishi Village have lived on inkstone for generations, with a history of 1300 years. From the end of Qing Dynasty to the beginning of liberation, the inkstone industry in Baishi Village reached its peak, and a large number of famous inkstone masters and teachers emerged, thus Baishi Village was established as the "first village of Duanyan". Most of the houses in Baishi Village are built according to the "bow" shaped village road. The inkstones in front of every household are piled up like hills, and more than half of the population in the village are engaged in inkstone making. Baishi Village is adjacent to Xijiang River. In the past, Xijiang River was flooded every year. Therefore, a flood dike was built in the village. One year, the flood in the upper reaches of Xijiang River soared and the earth embankment was in jeopardy. At this critical juncture, some villagers suddenly found three huge white stones exposed by continuous rain, and quickly carried them to the bank that was about to collapse for sealing. Somehow, with the help of God, these three white stones really stabilized the bank that was about to collapse and protected the lives and property of the villagers. In order to commemorate the three white stones, the villagers renamed the village Baishi Village. Today, these three white stones are like three protectors. After thousands of years of wind and rain, they still guard Baishi Village and witness the rise and fall of Baishi Village.

A few years ago, an old man who had been away from home for more than 60 years came back from Taiwan Province Province to find his relatives. Unexpectedly, the earth-shaking changes in his hometown made him lose his way for a while. Later, I happened to see three white stones around the base, and I was sure that I had really returned to my hometown. It turned out that the old man left his hometown for Taiwan Province Province in his teens. For decades, he missed his relatives in his hometown all the time, and countless times, three white stones appeared in his dreams. The white-haired old man held the stone and whispered, "Mom, I'm back".

Worship ancestors on the eighth day of April.

Baishi Village has a unique festival (villagers call it the Five Lights Festival for Ancestors). Every year, on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, major sacrificial activities are held to commemorate the stone ancestors and those who have contributed to Baishi Village in history. Duanyan can also accept people from other villages as long as they are engaged in the production of Duanyan. With the development of the times, the ceremony of praying on the eighth day of April has quietly disappeared. Now, some people in the village intend to resume this celebration.

In the past, people in Baishi Village made inkstones independently and had little communication with each other. Later, everyone thought it was easy to do things together, so they set up an organization called "Duanyan Travel" to coordinate the production of Duanyan in the village. Every year, on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, men, women and children in Baishi Village gather for five prayers before boarding the ancestral tablet to thank their ancestors for their shade and pray for a good year. There is a special place on the Duanyan Line where prayers are held. There are five stone tablets of ancient masters and one stone tablet of Zhang Zhidong, about 30 square meters. On that day, the festival manager will invite Nanwulao and the elders of our bank to hold an hour-long prayer ceremony in front of the ancestral tablet. At the same time, the director will also announce the expenditure of Duanyan Bank for one year on this day for your elders and friends to check. On that day, all friends over 60 will attend the meeting, or check whether the number is clear or elect a new manager. After that, everyone ate happily, drank heartily, exchanged inkstone art and evaluated the pros and cons, which was quite like a festival.
