Nanyang is one of the first historical and cultural cities in China to be opened to the outside world. It currently has 8 national-level key cultural relics protection units, 64 provincial-level ones, and 14 museums with different themes.

Among them, Nanyang Government Office and Neixiang County Government Office are the best-preserved two-level government offices in China's feudal society.

The large area of ??dinosaur egg fossils discovered in Nanyang has caused a sensation in the world. The rare treasures unearthed from the Chunqiu Tombs in Danyang, the capital of Chu in Xichuan County, are famous far and wide. The ruins of the Chu Great Wall, known as the "Father of the Great Wall of China", have attracted attention.

The "Nanzhao Ape Man" site in Xinghua Mountain, 3 kilometers north of Yunyang Town, Nazhao County, is the birthplace of humans in the Central Plains.

In 1978, scientists collected an ape-man tooth fossil and a large number of Quaternary mammal fossils here. After identification by experts from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, they named it "Nanzhao ape-man", which is about 500,000 years old.

The ancient human sites in the middle Pleistocene 2000 BC are roughly the same age as the Zhoukoudian ape man in Beijing.
