Stories and legends of Wuzhen:
Marshal Wen
There is a marshal Wen well in the south of Ding Sheng Bridge, and there is a marshal Wen pavilion beside the well. A statue of Marshal Wen is enshrined in the pavilion. The title on the pavilion is "Marshal Wen's Capital", and the left and right couplets are "protecting the villagers from the sun and the moon and avoiding the plague".
According to legend, Marshal Wen is a white-faced scholar who is enthusiastic about public welfare. One year, there was a drought south of the Yangtze River, and the river dried up. People draw well water for drinking, and water is as expensive as oil. One day, the scholar found an evil soul poisoning the well, so the next day, the scholar stayed by the well and refused to let people get water. Many people who don't know the truth scold him and beat him. In desperation, the scholar jumped into the well.
When people salvage the drowning scholar, they find that his face is livid, his teeth are cracked and his eyes are prominent, which is a very terrible symptom. Only then did people know that he was a hero who died for the safety of the people, so they worshipped him as "Marshal Wen" and set up a statue for him, hoping that he could have the spirit of driving away the ghosts of the plague in heaven and continue to benefit the place.
The statue of Marshal Wen looks fierce and dazzling, in fact, it is to suppress the ghost of Wen. The day when the scholar jumped into the well to report to the police was May 15, so there is a custom in Wuzhen to greet Marshal Wen on the 15th day of the fifth lunar month every year.
When welcoming, people carried out the statue of Marshal Wen in sedan chairs and patrolled the streets, asking him to put the wandering ghost Wen into the urn prepared in advance. The welcome team is spectacular, with gongs in front to clear the way and hard cards to protect the line;
The two men in the back are carrying an empty wine can. There is a green-faced ghost head with a rope tied to it in the jar. The rope passed through the pulley on the handlebar, and he pulled the rope as he walked. The ghost head is hidden in a jar, which is called collecting plague ghosts. Then two men carried an iron pot with charcoal and flame. It is said that fire can scare ghosts. Marshal Wen's sedan chair followed;
Finally, there were eight judges with swords and guns. It is said that in this way, there will be no plague in summer. This may be due to people's fear of the plague, and ancient medicine was not developed enough to eliminate the plague, so people imagined the image of Marshal Wen to ease their fears and pray for peace.
