Behind Jin Yuji on the Cliff
Miyazaki Hayao listened to Wagner's opera Valkyria when he conceived the film. Jin Yuji's original name was Brunside (the character in Valkyria). Later, when Miyazaki Hayao was painting, he had a whim and changed it to "Ponyo". The name of young hero Sosuke comes from the character Nonaka Sosuke in Natsume Sosuke's novel Door (in Japanese, "Sosuke" and "Sosuke" are pronounced the same). During the release of Hal's Moving Castle, Ghibli members collectively went to a small town near Seto Inland Sea for a holiday. Miyazaki Hayao likes the traditional houses there. Everyone lives in a hotel on a cliff with a view of the sea. This trip gave birth to goldfish princess on the cliff. In the sunflower garden where Zong Jie often goes, there is a beautiful gladiolus. This is Miyazaki Hayao's arrangement. The flower language of gladiolus is passionate love, yearning, hard work and forgetting, which alludes to Ponyo's story. There are often delicious foods in Miyazaki Hayao's animation works. In this film, Risha made Lamian Noodles for Sosuke and Ponyo. Miyazaki Hayao himself especially likes spinach Lamian Noodles, but because the spinach is not well painted, he changed the green leaves on the back into onion segments. There are half an egg and two slices of ham on the noodles. There is a scene where Ponyo eats ham. At first, the painter painted Ponyo eating the top piece of ham. Later, after investigation and textual research, the painting supervisor changed it to choose the ham piece at the bottom-because the first piece was scalded with noodle soup.
