China ancient god beast is divided into four layers.

Spirit: Kirin, Phoenix, Tortoise and Dragon.

Gods: Dragon, White Tiger, Suzaku, Xuanwu.

Four evils: chaos, Qiong Qi, delicacy and gluttony.

Four gods

The Four Gods, also known as the Four Elephants and the Four Spirits, namely the Dragon, the White Tiger, the Suzaku and the Xuanwu, are the favorite mascots of the ancient people in China. These four groups of animals are also the four gods in China's ancient mythology. During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, due to the prevalence of the Five Elements Theory, the four elephants were also colored as Qinglong, Baihu, Suzaku and Xuanwu. In the Han dynasty, the four elephants evolved into gods of Taoist belief, so they were immediately called the four spirits. Another major manifestation of the four ancient gods in China was military affairs. During the Warring States period, there was a saying that there was a suzaku in front and a basalt in the back, a green dragon on the left and a white tiger on the right, which was simply an orientation map.

Qinglong, blue, stands for wood.

White tiger, white, represents gold.

Suzaku, red, stands for fire.

Xuanwu is black, representing water.

Feng shui theory often says, "There is a dragon on the left, a white tiger on the right, suzaku in front and Xuanwu behind". It turns out that the ancient people's position was to sit facing south as the main architectural orientation, and so was the orientation of the capital. This involves the requirements of climate and environment, especially for temperate buildings to cope with sandstorms, strong winds and sunshine, it is best to sit facing south. Therefore, the orientation of "sitting north to south" on the ground corresponds to the sky system, that is, "Zuo Long, Youbaihu, Qianzhu Province, HouXuanwu". This terrain forms a pattern of high mountains and distant mountains surrounding acupoints. It is called "Four Gods Correspondence", which is the best layout for building Yin House and Yang House.

Ancient astronomy in China centered on Polaris and Beidou constellation, and divided the bright stars around it into 28 groups, called "Twenty-eight Nights", and then grouped every seven nights into a big group according to the proximity of seats, which divided the stars into four big groups. For each large film of the Seven Nights, people draw invisible dotted lines with their imaginations and connect them with dotted lines. They draw four images of "Dragon, White Tiger, Suzaku and Xuanwu", which are collectively called "Four Elephants" or "Four Gods" according to their distant and unpredictable starlight. This layout is actually used to watch the stars and remember the distribution of the stars in the sky, reflecting the constellations in North China and Central China.

The "Four Gods" town house is a statement including Yin and Yang houses, which requires that the land should be in accordance with the sky and the land should be protected by the sky, thus forming the basic concept of Feng Shui. The name of "Four Gods" is a combination of four kinds of auspicious beasts transformed from astrology. They are both in the sky and correspond to any corner of the ground, and act on any house of yin and yang. As long as there is space, they will interact.

The "Four Gods" represent the four directions of east, west, north and south, and provide scientific reference for dividing the sky and making calendars. Later, with the popularity of the theory of yin-yang and five elements, people paid more attention to the patron saint function of the four gods and were endowed with higher divinity. 28 huts have also become objects of worship. During the Qin and Han Dynasties, the four gods matched the four seasons, and the four colors of blue, white, red and black were systematically recorded in Huainanzi and Historical Records, which became a generally accepted ideological system at that time.

Suzaku, also known as Suzaku, is the god of the South, which consists of seven birds, namely, heart, ghost, willow, star, Zhang, wing and hibiscus. In Volume 44 of Taishang Huang Zhi and Zhai Yi, Nan Zhu Cuixing is called: "Su Jing Tianjing Xing Jun, Ghost House Tiankui Xing Jun, Liu Su Chutian Xing Jun, Star House Tianku Xingjun, Zhang Su Libra Xingjun, Alien House Tianjun, Extremely Night Tianjie Xingjun." Regarding its image, there are seven clouds in "The Collection of Jiao Tong's Needs": "South Pearl Cuisine, from the length of birds, the change of Dan points, the sound of blue thunder, the colorful colors and the six images of artifacts, to guide me." At the same time, Taoism also uses it in alchemy terms. For example, Volume 72 of Seven Chapters and Clouds quotes the "Four Gods Dan" in the ancient classic, saying: "Zhu, Nanhuo Dansha, plans to become a dragon and a bird, whose breath rises to the sky, and its mass array is the ground, so it is the foundation of the Great Dan. It flies when it sees fire.

Suzaku is not a phoenix. Also known as the three-legged god bird or the three-legged blackbird or blackbird is a three-legged crow. Suzaku is one of the four spirits. Like the other three, it comes from the stars. Zhu is red and likes fire, while the south belongs to fire. Legend has it that in the vast East China Sea, a sacred tree, Fusang, stands still, and ten three-legged owls perch on its branches. They are all sons of the oriental gods, and they travel in the sky in turn every day. Later, ten three-legged feet did not obey the instructions of the eastern gods, and ten suns appeared in the sky at the same time. The land was scorched by grass and scorched by heat. Humans are in danger of extinction. Di Jun gave Zhai a bow and an arrow to teach these sons. But these three-legged Wu didn't care about Hou Yi at all, so they tried to be brave together. Hou Yi was furious, pulled out his bow and arrow and aimed at the land three feet away. Shoot down nine tripods in a row. After that, the emperor ordered the last three-legged bird to wander around every day without rest. It's different from the immortal birds in the west.

turtle

Xuanwu is a spiritual thing composed of turtles and snakes. Xuanwu originally meant Xuanming, and the ancient sounds of Wu and Ming are interlinked. Wu means black; Ghost means yin. At first, Xuan Ming described the tortoise divination as follows: the tortoise's back is black, and the tortoise divination is to invite the tortoise to ask his ancestors in the underworld, bring back the answers and show them to the world in the form of divination. Therefore, the earliest Xuanwu is the tortoise. Since then, the meaning of Xuanming has been expanding. Turtles live in rivers, lakes and seas (including turtles), so Xuan Ming became a water god; The tortoise lives long, and Xuan Ming has become a symbol of immortality; The first underworld was in the north, and Oracle Bone Inscriptions's divination in the Shang Dynasty was that "divination must point to the north", so Xuan Ming became a northern god again. Like the other three spirits, Xuanwu is also derived from 28 stars in the world: Dousu, Niusu, Nvsu, Xu Su, Great Sage, rooms and walls.

White Tiger

In China, the white tiger is the god of war and war. Tigers have many magical powers, such as avoiding evil, avoiding disasters, praying and punishing evil, promoting kindness, getting rich and getting married. And it is one of the four spirits, and of course it is also changed from the stars. Of the 28 stars, 7 are in the west: Kui, Lou, Stomach, Ang, Bi, Gou and Shen. Therefore, it is the representative of the west, its whiteness is due to the west, and it belongs to gold in the five elements, and its color is white. So it is called white tiger not because it is white, but because it comes from five elements.

In the eyes of the ancients, the tiger is a terrible thing and a respectable thing. The terrible thing is that it will eat people and animals. It is respectable that it can ward off evil spirits because of its great power. In some ancient books, such as Ying Shao's Custom Yi Tong. Sacrifice in the Eastern Han Dynasty: "Draw a tiger on the door, ghosts dare not enter", "A tiger is a penis, and all animals are long. Can resist sharpness and eat ghosts. Today, when people die, they must burn and drink tiger skins. Beating its paws can also cure evil. This is also a fact. " The ancients also thought that the white tiger was an auspicious feeling:' virtue is the best of all birds and animals.'

Qinglong, the patron saint of the East in Taoism

Qinglong, also known as "Black Dragon", is the God of the East in ancient mythology. Dragon is the totem of the Chinese nation. Since the Yellow Emperor entrusted it to Tianhe and weiser, it has always been a symbol of the Chinese nation and even the whole of China, and its stereotype was in the Han Dynasty. Since the Great Han Dynasty, it has been identified as the symbol and representative of the emperor. In oriental legend, the dragon looks like a long snake, the head of a unicorn, the tail of a carp, a long beard, horns like deer, five claws and a frightening appearance, while in western mythology, the dragon is more like a lizard with wings.

Dragons are seven dwellings in the East-horns, horns, forks, houses, hearts, tails and dustpans. These seven dwellings are very similar in shape to dragons. From their meanings, we can see that the horn is the dragon's horn, the horn is the neck, the fork is the root, the room is the arm, the threat, the heart is the heart, and the tail is the tail. There is also a part of the dragon's heart, which some people call "fire", which is related to sunny and rainy days. Because Qinglong belongs to wood, it is also the age of Jupiter.

kylin

Kirin, also known as "Kirin" or "Lin", is an animal in the ancient legend of China, which is called "Four Spirits" together with phoenix, turtle and dragon. Known as the sacred beastmaster. Moreover, it is the mount of God, ranking second only to Qinglong among the four soul beasts. Later, because of the feudal emperor's admiration for dragons and phoenixes, Kirin was excluded from the people. Become a unique representative of folk auspiciousness.

Kirin culture is a traditional folk culture in China. Hoping Kirin to give birth is one of the ancient fertility worship in China. In ancient China, Kirin was regarded as a dragon. I hope to have a unicorn. "Liner" is the auspicious and beautiful expectation of the people.

From the appearance, Kirin is an auspicious treasure, which combines the dragon head, antlers, lion's eyes, tiger's back, bear's waist, snake scales, horseshoes and oxtail. There are horns, which are dragon horns. The horns are extremely hard and light gray. According to the description of ancient books, its body is like a raccoon and its tail is like a cow. Hooves are like horses; There is a diagonal line at the top of the round head. It was regarded as a god beast and a benevolent beast by the ancients. Kirin has a long life span and can live for two thousand years. Can spit fire, sound like thunder. The caterpillar is 360, and the unicorn is long.

phoenix

Phoenix is the king of birds in ancient legends in China, and it is the national totem of Han nationality like dragon. Feathers are usually described as red. Phoenix, like Kirin, is a general term for male and female. The male is a phoenix, and the female is a phoenix, always called a phoenix. Phoenix, Qi Fei, is a symbol of good luck and harmony. Phoenix often represents women. Also known as Dan Bird, Firebird, Stork Chicken, Wei Feng, etc.

Images are generally chicken head, swallow mouth, snake neck, eagle claw, fish tail, turtle back and peacock hair. There are five kinds of legends, namely, red Suzaku, blue qingluan, yellow sinister, white sinister and purple sinister. According to myths and legends, every time a phoenix dies, it will light a fire all over its body and then be reborn in the fire. This is the so-called "phoenix nirvana". This cycle will lead to eternal life.

Phoenix's moral character is noble. It doesn't drink the morning dew, it doesn't eat the tender bamboo, and it doesn't live without the Millennium phoenix tree.

Phoenix was once regarded as yang, because the five elements belong to fire and represent men; Dragon and five elements belong to water and are regarded as yin, representing women. Later, because the image of the dragon was more popular with the emperor, it was changed to take the dragon as the yang and the phoenix as the yin.

turtle

Turtle is the only realistic animal among the four spirits, and it also has the longest life span among animals. People not only regard the turtle as a symbol of health and longevity, but also think that it has the spirituality to predict the future. In ancient times, before major events were held, wizards would burn tortoise shells, and then predict good or bad luck according to the crackling lines on the tortoise shells. Therefore, people call turtles "god turtles" and "spirit turtles". Turtles were once greatly respected in China. In the palaces, houses and tombs of ancient emperors, turtles made of stone or bronze were used to symbolize long-term national luck.

dragon

Dragon is a magical animal in China mythology, which is good at changing, stimulating and benefiting all things. It is said that it can be hidden and displayed, reaching the sky in the spring breeze and diving in the autumn wind. It can also cause clouds and rain. It was the leader of many scales, the head of the four spirits (dragon, phoenix, unicorn and turtle), and later became a symbol of imperial power. Emperors of all dynasties called themselves dragons, and their vessels were decorated with dragons.

Spirit and God are often confused. In fact, it is universally acknowledged that the "Four Gods" are auspicious animals. The stereotypes of the "Four Gods" also predated the Zhou Dynasty. Of course, some people call the "four gods" the "four spirits". However, the "four spirits" and "four gods" in the same Book of Rites are different.

There are four clouds in Book of Rites IX: "Forest, phoenix, turtle and dragon are the four spirits".

In the Book of Rites Quli, there is a cloud saying, "Good, the former Suzaku is behind Xuanwu, and the left dragon is behind the right white tiger." Its sparse saying is, "Suzaku, Xuanwu, Dragon and White Tiger are also famous in all directions."

It can be seen that the two combinations of "four spirits" and "four gods" exist at the same time. The former refers to rare creatures on the ground (except turtles), while the latter refers to the stars in the sky.

The following comparison can also be made:

Black Dragon = Qi+Lin; Suzaku = Phoenix+Phoenix; White tiger = fennel+fennel; Xuanwu = tortoise+snake

According to etymology, "Ying Long" is a thousand-year-old dragon with wings, and the 500-year-old dragon is called Ceratosaurus. Dragons are extraordinary things, and their life span is extremely long. Ying Long is the most expensive dragon (of course, some people think that Ying Long can refer to ancient clan and tribe and mysterious ancient country-Ying Long family and Yingguo). In Tianwen, Qu Yuan, a great poet in China, was puzzled by how the dragon helped Dayu to control water and how to draw a river on the ground with his tail to introduce floods into the sea.

Ying Long's Illustrations in Ancient Books

It's still Ying Long, but this one is a bit like the Western Dragon.

Guo Long tiancheng Xuan

" It looks like a wild animal. Is its habit good or dangerous? It has become a dragon on the top of temples, towers and pavilions, or a beast on the roof. It can also put out fires. According to the above statement, the prototype of the dragon should be the gecko in our life.

Today's cultural historians believe that Candle dragon is the myth of the northern dragon totem clan, and its true colors should be the male roots evolved from male genitalia. It came into being later than the era of female worship.

Shan Hai Jing Huang Da Jing: "Beyond the Northwest Sea, to the north of Chishui, there is Zhang Weishan. There is a god, the snake's face is red, and his straight eyes are riding a horse, gloomy and bright. No food, no sleep, no rain. This is a nine-shade candle, which means Candle dragon. " Overseas classic: "The God of Zhongshan, named Yin Candle, regards it as day, feels it as night, blows it as winter, calls it summer, and calls it as wind without drinking or eating;" It is a thousand miles long, in the east of the cave. It is a thing, a face, a snake's body, and a red color. It lives at the foot of Zhongshan Mountain. " See Gong's Outline of Primitive Worship.

Chu Ci Tian Wen: "Why is the northwest open?" What will Candle dragon do if the weather is bad? Another "big move": "There is a cold mountain in the north, and the dragon is forgiven. "

Candle dragon is in the north of Yanmen, covered by Yuwei Mountain, and can't see the sun. The man of God has a Zhang Long face and no feet. (Huainanzi Terrain Training)

There is no news of Yin and Yang before the day reaches the northwest, so there is a fire dragon shining in Tianmen. (Guo Pu notes "Great Northern Wilderness" and Candle dragon quotes "Rime")
