Basic introduction of Yu Garden

Shanghai Yuyuan Garden is located in the northeast of Shanghai Yuyuan Garden Tourism Business District. It is a famous classical garden in the south of the Yangtze River and a famous scenic spot at home and abroad. 1982 was approved as "National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit" by the State Council.

Yu Garden was built between Jiajing and Wanli in Ming Dynasty, with a history of more than 450 years. Pan Yunduan, the owner of the garden, used to be a messenger from Sichuan. In order to let his father enjoy his old age, Pan Yunduan started quarrying stones, digging ponds, building pavilions, repairing bamboo and building gardens in his vegetable fields from the year before Ming Jiajing (1559). After more than 20 years of painstaking efforts, Yu Garden was built.

Up to now, there are still historical sites such as the library building, the birthplace of "Shanghai Painting and Calligraphy", and Chuntang, where the Shanghai Knife Society Uprising Command is located. The ancients praised Yu Garden as "a must in the southeast" and "a famous garden in the southeast".
