Speaking of the old city gates of Nanjing, there is a folk saying: "Thirteen on the inside, eighteen on the outside, with a door bolt pointing outward." This city has been described as "a door bolt pointing outward" The gate refers to Shence Gate. Shence Gate is smaller in scale, with the city gate inside and the Wengcheng outside. The Wengcheng Gate is not directly opposite the city gate, but opens at the northeast corner of the Wengcheng. The jingle vividly summarizes its special architectural form. Today's Shence Gate is the relatively complete city gate in Nanjing, with the Wengcheng, Zhenmen and the three-bay Xieshan Peak Tower still there.
According to legend, Shence Gate was personally surveyed, planned and built by Liu Bowen, Zhu Yuanzhang’s military advisor. To enter and exit the city gate, you have to go through the left and right door openings. Only one door is opened on weekdays, and "one hole is opened in case of emergency". This fully embodies Zhu Yuanzhang's ideals. The idea of ??building cities in different locations and under different environmental conditions according to local conditions.
Although Shence Gate is located in a remote place, it stands out on the edge of Xuanwu Lake and is close to Mufu Mountain (formerly known as Baitu Mountain) and the Yangtze River to the north. It plays an important role in military defense.
In the thirteenth year of Yongli in the Southern Ming Dynasty (the sixteenth year of Shunzhi in the Qing Dynasty, 1659 AD), in order to establish the great cause of countering the Qing Dynasty and restoring the Ming Dynasty, Zheng Chenggong, the general of the Southern Ming Dynasty, was ordered to lead his army to attack the Qing army and attack the Qing government in the southeastern coastal areas. Nanjing, an important southeastern town. Zheng Chenggong's 100,000 troops camped 83 times in Baitu Mountain (today's Shogunate Mountain) outside Nanjing, cutting off water and land transportation and turning Nanjing, with only more than 10,000 Qing troops garrisoned, into an isolated city.
Zheng Chenggong’s army and the Qing army engaged in two battles outside Shence Gate, causing the Qing army to lose more than a thousand people. Lang Tingzuo, the governor of Liangjiang in the Qing Dynasty, ordered the city gates of Shencemen to be closed tightly and not to go to war. While he was asking for help from everywhere, he also wanted to delay time by pretending to surrender. Zheng Chenggong couldn't help being proud and underestimating the enemy despite the frequent reports of victory. He agreed to the Qing envoy's request for a month's grace and stood still, waiting for the Qing army to open the door and present the city.
The Qing army found that the Zheng army's defense at the foot of Baitu Mountain was extremely lax, so they chose this as a breakthrough. On the night of July 21st, the Qing army quietly opened the right door of Shence Gate, sneaked out of the city, and attacked Zheng's army. At dawn, they returned with a small victory. After the victory, the Qing army's morale was greatly boosted, and they swarmed out of the city from Shence Gate to fight. Zheng's army was caught off guard, rushed into battle, and retreated in chaos. After the "Battle of Baitu Mountain", Zheng Chenggong's army suffered tens of thousands of casualties and more than ten generals died in the battle. The victory of Zheng Chenggong's Northern Expedition, known as the "Southeast Earthquake" in history, disappeared. In order to celebrate the victory of the Qing army, Emperor Shunzhi of the Qing Dynasty issued an edict to rename Shence Gate "Desheng Gate".
Although Shencemen is a military fortress, it is located in a remote area and is rarely inhabited. It was basically closed and not used during the Ming, Qing and Republic of China periods. In 1928, the Nationalist Government renamed Desheng Gate as "Peace Gate". During the Anti-Japanese War, the Japanese army occupied Nanjing and built the urn outside Hepingmen into a gasoline depot. After liberation, the Nanjing Military Region took over the site and still used it as an oil depot.
Because it has been a military restricted area for a long time, Shence Gate has always been shrouded in mystery. According to the Nanjing Ming City Wall Scenic Belt Plan, Shencemen Yuecheng Park was completed in August 2001. Shencemen finally lifted the veil of mystery and showed its unique charm to the world.
