Chong Chong Cake and Ice Slurry

Chongchong cake and ice syrup are two unrelated snacks. Chongchong cake is popular in Yunnan and Guizhou, while ice syrup is popular in Sichuan and Guizhou.

If there is any connection, it is that at the street night market in Anshun, on the green stall table, there is Chong Chong cake on my left hand side and ice syrup on my right hand side.

When I arrived in Xingyi after a long journey, I didn’t know if I really came to this small town in Guizhou just for this cake.

I learned about Chongchong Gao from a program introducing Guizhou cuisine. I was curious about its production process, so I silently wrote down the name of the store.

It was also that time that I learned about the city of Xingyi for the first time - the capital of Qianxinan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture.

In the street garden of Xingyi Old Town, six old lanes extend in a radial curve, the shiny stone roads and the gate tower corridors retain the last bit of simplicity and charm in a commercial atmosphere.

At the end of Douya Street, I finally found the signboard of "Zhao Manniang" Chong Chong Gao. I walked into the deep alley and the store door was closed.

I asked the owner of the bookstore next door about the situation, and he said that it was not open and that you had to make a reservation by phone in advance.

It may be that the media publicity was too intense and there were too many diners, so the shop owner couldn't handle it, so he had to operate freely and willfully.

I looked carefully at the signboards and posters, but there was no contact information left on them.

I came to Douya Street for two days in a row to investigate, but "Zhao Manniang" always closed the door and thanked customers.

Although I didn’t come to Xingyi just for the cake, I still left Xingyi with some regrets.

On the way from Xingyi to Guiyang, I stopped in Anshun for one night.

I have no intention or impulse to go to Huangguoshu Scenic Area. The crowds in summer may be more powerful than the waterfall. I am afraid!

Anshun is not a big city, nor is it prosperous, but the night market is still quite lively.

I happily came across a Chong Chong Gao stall. I didn’t expect that my regret of not seeing Chong Chong Gao when I went to Xingyi was made up for on the streets of Anshun.

Use a small bamboo pot to hold cooked millet, place it in the vent at the top of a large teapot and steam it. Add the white slurry made from water chestnut powder to the boiling water in the teapot. Add the steamed millet and stir vigorously until it becomes sticky.

Add white sugar, chopped peanuts, black sesame seeds, and rose syrup, continue to stir and mix, and start eating.

Personally, don't make it too thin, make it slightly viscous and you can feel the grains of millet, and the taste may be better.

The stall owner told me that this kind of millet is white and is specially used to make millet cakes in the Yunnan-Guizhou region. It is different from the yellow yellow rice and sticky millet in the north.

It was my first time to taste Chong Chong Gao. I had no comparison and I didn’t know whether Xingyi’s “Zhao Manniang” was superior in skill or just famous.

Ice powder and ice syrup are everywhere on the streets of Anshun.

Everyone may know that ice powder is a must-have snack in Sichuan restaurants, but the ice powder here is also topped with various fruit pieces and crushed peanuts.

This is the first time I have encountered ice slurry. Add mango meat cubes (you can also choose watermelon or banana) into the blender, add ice residue and smash it, rotate the blender at high speed, and manually turn it up and down until it becomes sticky, then add the cooked

Beat the glutinous rice for a while, pour it out, add chopped peanuts, and drizzle with syrup.

Most diners choose mangoes, not only because of their special aroma, but also because of their bright yellow color when they turn into thick syrup.

Food begins with color, this summary seems to make some sense.

When eating the ice syrup, you can feel the softness of crushed glutinous rice and the crispy aroma of crushed peanuts. Of course, the fragrance of mango lingers under the tip of your nose from beginning to end and never disappears.

At the same table, I finished the warm cake first, and then ate the cold and refreshing ice cream.

In Anshun in July, the night was still a bit cool, and I regretted not bringing sun protection clothing with me.

I sat in front of a street stall and ate for almost twenty minutes. My stomach was filled with coldness, and when the night wind blew, I started to shiver and my whole body felt cold.

I'm worried that I might get into trouble like catching a cold or having a fever because of my gluttony.

I have to admit that middle-aged uncles are still different from the young people on the street who like skewers, chicken steaks, milk tea, and ice cream, both hot and cold.

Fortunately, I had a good night's sleep and was fine.
