Changshu New Year customs

In ancient times, for Changshu, a society dominated by farming, all festivals were related to "eating".

It’s Chinese New Year.

Starting from the "Laba Festival" on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, every household will dry the seeds, select the excess and the remaining insect-eaten grains, and cook them in one pot on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, called "Laba porridge".

On the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month, steaming steamed buns is a must during the "Little New Year".

It is said that the master of the Zao family will return to heaven on this day to spend the New Year and stay for twelve days, reporting to God the life of ordinary people in the twelve months of the year.

Every household "steamed steamed buns" tells the master of the Zao family to conceal some of the happy lives of ordinary people when reporting to God, and pray for better weather in the coming year.

"Mantou Mantou" means "concealing the truth from the boss in heaven".

Farmers in rice areas use "steamed cakes" and "made dumplings" instead.

After sending away the Kitchen God, every household celebrates the New Year with joy.

The New Year's Eve is decorated with lanterns and colorful decorations, and the New Year's Eve is full of reunions, celebrating a good harvest and praying for a good harvest in the coming year.

Spring Festival, the first day of the lunar month is God’s birthday.

Early in the morning, the head of the household carefully placed the first bowl of sweet glutinous rice reunion noodles and longevity noodles on the highest platform outside the house, set up incense candles and placed fruits to show respect for God.

On the fifth day of the Lunar New Year, the Kitchen God returns home.

This is the "God of Wealth" for the common people.

Therefore, "receiving the God of Wealth" has become a folk custom.

It is inevitable to put the leftover New Year's goods on a table, hoping to keep the "God of Wealth".

On the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, "Lantern Festival", every household makes Lantern Festival.

This Yuanxiao is bigger than Tuanyuan and smaller than Tangtuan.

After dinner, adults and children watched the lanterns and then went home to eat Yuanxiao. It is still said to be a "late night snack".
