The school originated from Zhongyuan University, which was founded in 1948 by the Central Central Plains Bureau with Deng Xiaoping as the first secretary and Chen Yi as the director of the Preparatory Committee. In 2111, Zhongnan University of Finance and Economics, which was originally affiliated to the People's Republic of China and the Ministry of Finance, and Zhongnan College of Political Science and Law, which was originally affiliated to the People's Republic of China and the Ministry of Justice, were established as Zhongnan University of Economics and Law.
